#NRL 2013: Who leads the Player of the Year Race with 6 games to go? | #NRLTweetPOTY Votes through Round 20

PLAYER OF THE YEAR:
Final Public Leaderboard Round 20
2013 @NRLTweet Player of the Year Awards

2013 NRL Premiership

By W D Nicolson - August 2, 2013

The Dally M's may have 'fallen silent' after Round 16 but here on www.wdnicolson.com we're pretty sure all you care about is who is leading the 4th Annual @NRLTweet Player of the Year Awards - as voted by judges who have no rhyme or reason to be biased.
This is their honest opinion and they know it is on their head if they let bias creep into their judgement of a variety of teams throughout a season. The Leaderboard is all that goes silent for the next 6 rounds to complete 2013 because the Votes keep on coming via this Hashtag #NRLTweetPOTY every weekend.

Throughout the season Melbourne's Cooper Cronk and Cronulla's Todd Carney have been in and around the lead for the coveted Award - but finally we've seen a forward break into the Top 3 in South Sydney's Sam Burgess.

With six rounds remaining there remains a maximum of 48 Votes for an individual to attain - so if any player has grabbed a vote through the first 20 rounds - he can still mathematically win.

Carney won the inaugural award in 2010 when he led th Sydney Roosters to the Finals, Benji Marshall took it home in 2011 and last year it was all about Ben Barba.

Marshall and Barba are not in contention this year, but a host of quality players are certainly within striking distance of the Top 3 with six rounds left.

Cronk and Shaun Johnson have scored the most Man of the Match Awards with 4 each (where both voters give one player the full 4 votes), while 7 players have received the MOTM 3 times - Greg Inglis, James Graham, Luke Walsh, Mitchell Pearce, Josh Dugan, Robbie Farha and Johnathan Thurston.

Below is the Top 10 through 20 Rounds of 4-2-1 Voting (process explained below) - you'll notice no Cameron Smith, Daly Cherry-Evans, James Maloney, Billy Slater or Robbie Farah amongst the names listed... but if you read on for the individual Team Vote Leaderboards - you'll see all five stars remain in the hunt for the award if they have a big run home. And that's the beauty of this award - it is all about rewarding players who win games for their teams above all else.

So if a player carries his side to wins in 3 or 4 of the last 6 games - he could win this award from outside the Top 10, if not the Top 20. Thus a player is directly rewarded for the impact he has on wins his team has in a year vs simply being okay-ish for most matches - win or lose.
Top 10 after Round 20
  1. 49 Votes - Todd Carney, CRO
  2. 45 Votes - Cooper Cronk, MEL
  3. 42 Votes - Sam Burgess, SOU

  6. 40 Votes - Johnathan Thurston, NQL

One of the reasons we set this up is the Dally M Award lacks the kind of objectivity that a true player of the year award really should have, and while we aren't claiming our system is perfect - it is judged on what happens on the field with reputations and bias left by the wayside.

How Voting Works...

The way the #NRLTweetPOTY Awards are structured means that if you are the best player on the field you gain a big advantage on the players who are solid every week, but don't always turn a game on its head or win it for their team. That is because the most votes a player can gain in a match is 8 Votes (2 voters per game hand out 4-2-1s), while a player who is only the second or third best on the field can only gain a maximum of 4 votes (if they don't get a single Man of the Match vote).

This way the best players who win games for their team are recognised as much as possible, because after all a team only needs about 12 wins a season to make the Finals - and players that contribute heavily to those victories deserve total recognition, versus players who are solid all year but don't actually shift the balance of power in games and their teams fail to fire on the competition ladder. Because remember - we play to win the game, not just to be competitive.
