NRL Round 20 Tips from The Postman | 2020 Season

The Postman's Tips for Round 202020.
Published September 23, 2020

So... another 6/8 effort and of the two upsets there was only one you possibly saw coming... and it wasn't the Bulldogs over Rabbitohs. Manly are really bad at some basics right now and the Titans are playing adventurous footy and getting rewarded.

But still to get to 108 from 152 with 8 games left, means that to stay at the 70% success rate for the season - I need to get at least 4/8 in Round 20.

Can it be done? Who knows after Ricky Stuart and Craig Bellamy rested 87% of their rosters for the final round in what should have been gimme games at full strength.

Round 20 Tips:
Thursday
Broncos over Cowboys
I have absolutely no idea who to pick here... expecting to be 0/1 straight away. Seriously who do you pick???

Friday
Knights over Titans
0/2 is on the cards already! Getting to 4/8 could be tough kids. Knights on the road but they do have a home final to play for... so go with Ponga and Pearce.

Roosters over Rabbitohs
If the Knights drop their earlier game to the Titans then Souths will be playing for a home final here so if you desperate you can entertain the Bunnies... but don't be dumb. Pick Easts.

Saturday
Panthers over Bulldogs
Penrith don't stuff up like Souths last week. Dogs however might need to win to avoid the spoon if the Broncos win on Friday night... but yeah Penrith.

Raiders over Sharks
UPDATE SATURDAY 4:55pm Saturday: With the Sharks now resting four players of their own, going with the Raiders in a change of tip.
Surely Cronulla beat a reserve grade side and get their confidence up for the real thing a week later against the same opposition.

Eels over Tigers
Parra and the Tigers in a track meet in Benji's last game... it'll be entertaining I'm sure of that but go with the Eels who may need to win to hold onto 4th.

Sunday
Warriors over Sea Eagles
No RTS is a factor but again no Tommy Trbojevic and Manly are a rabble outside of DCE really. I really don't have a preference here but it is the Warriors last game of the season and it is on the Central Coast so I'm going with them to say goodbye to their hosts with a win.

Storm over Dragons
Toss a coin... and pick Melbourne anyway.

NRL Round 19 Tips from The Postman | 2020 Season

The Postman's Tips for Round 192020.
Published September 16, 2020

WHY DID I KEEP FAITH WITH THE WARRIORS!?!
A perfect round was just sitting there and I didn't use my brain... sure the Warriors win and I'm a genius with 8/8 and everyone else who breezed through to 7/7 would be crying about the Sharks... but it was a dumb upset pick at the end of the round.
If the game was at the start of the round - no dramas at all - you cop it and move on but Shaun Johnson was playing and I even said as much "If Shaun Johnson plays I will probably go with the Sharks but at this stage - Warriors baby!" - so to drop a perfecto like this is sheer stupidity.
Listen to thine self... yikes.
Still 7/8 doesn't suck. On to Round 19.

Round 19 Tips:
Thursday
Rabbitohs over Bulldogs
Souths should really put a 20+ margin of victory on the woeful Bulldogs this Thursday.

Friday
Panthers over Cowboys
Penrith should put 40 on the Cowboys.

Eels over Broncos
Parramatta bounce back here and probably win well. Brisbane are a mess and the end of 2020 can't come quick enough.

Saturday
Sea Eagles over Titans
Roll the dice. If Tom Trbojevic plays Manly deserve favouritism but the Gold Coast have been playing the far better footy over the last two months. Manly I guess.

Storm over Tigers
Melbourne win and secure 2nd spot for the Finals.

Roosters over Sharks
Even though Tedesco and Taukeiaho aren't playing - Cronulla are going to get an almighty reality check from the Premiers on Saturday night.

Sunday
Raiders over Warriors
If Canberra match the Warriors up front in the first half - this game has the look of quite a few games Canberra has won of late - a close first half and then it'll be downhill skiing for them in the second.

Knights over Dragons
Newcastle and Saints were bad bad bad last week... Newcastle are still a chance at a home final as the 5th or 6th seed so they surely lift for this with Ponga, Barnett and Hunt back.

NRL Round 18 Tips from The Postman | 2020 Season

The Postman's Tips for Round 182020.
Published September 8, 2020

Let's be honest - Manly had their game won well before Josh Reynolds and Russell Packer did their Maccas run... but then the Tigers played some caution to the wind footy and consigned the Sea Eagles to possibly their worse loss of the season (yes I'm including their numerous pathetic efforts so far) as you just shouldn't lose a game like that when it seems the only thing the last 10 minutes is going to offer is whether or not you'll break 40 points or maybe even 50... The Tigers were shot. Yikes Dessie... not a good look.

The other upset was the Cowboys beating a Dragons team that has just no idea... they had the Titans and Cowboys back to back and a Sharks team teetering on the edge of implosion ahead of them and they've dropped both games... disastrous for Dean Young's head coaching hopes but it's not like Anthony Griffin's going to last long in the gig now he's got it from next year (on just a two year contract = such faith!).

Those were the two games I dropped in Round 17... but admittedly I wasn't overly adventurous with the tips.

95 from 136 with three rounds to go is 69.9%... so 70% is achievable but I can't afford to miss much.

Round 18 Tips:
Thursday
Rabbitohs over Tigers
South Sydney couldn't get the job done against Melbourne but their form stayed pretty good despite the defeat. The Tigers were ordinary for most of their win over Manly and the final flurry shouldn't make you think they've turned a corner. Souths here.

Friday
Sea Eagles over Bulldogs
Next...

Panthers over Eels
Penrith need to get ruthless before the end of the season and dust someone like they did Manly and Canberra in back to back weeks a month or so ago... smashing Parra who likely won't have Mahoney would be just the tonic to pace themselves into the Finals. Parra have barely fired a bullet since they tore the Cowboys up in Round 8 and need a big scalp to reenergise their self belief. The Eels aren't without hope here but it is Penrith for me.

Saturday
Raiders over Dragons
Canberra didn't try and attack against the Chooks and got handled easily... the Dragons just showed zero gumption in losing to the pitiful Cowboys in a game that finally decided their Top 8 fate... go with the Raiders but Saints will show up again in one of the three games to finish their horror season... be warned.

Titans over Broncos
The Gold Coast will finish ahead of the Broncos on the table regardless of this result but they can make sure the Cowboys can't catch them in the completely useless 'battle for QLD' if they beat Brisbane. And I expect them to... although David Fifita will be primed to show what he can do against his future teammates. Still the Titans have the form of late on the board so you need to pick them.

Roosters over Knights
No Ponga, Barnett or Hunt - and the Chooks will probably be in a position to start Crichton and Cordner for the first time in a long time together on the edges. Keary and Tedesco could have a field day on Newcastle's edges... but JWH will be a bit lost without Ponga to target all match. Chooks win and win well to secure their Top 4 spot.

Sunday
Storm over Cowboys
Melbourne by as many as Craig Bellamy wants them to win by... is there a goals in a game record Cameron Smith can add to his collection?

Warriors over Sharks
Cmon Warriors - give us all something to cheer for the final two weeks of the season by knocking off the Sharks and getting to within 2 points of them in 8th spot (but realistically they need to finish 2 points clear of the Sharks due to differential issues)... Cronulla will however be safe in the Top 8 if they win here and could actually finish as high as 5th or 6th if they won out and results went their way. If Shaun Johnson plays I will probably go with the Sharks but at this stage - Warriors baby!

NRL Round 17 Tips from The Postman | 2020 Season

The Postman's Tips for Round 172020.
Published September 2, 2020

Well reality hit like a freight train in Round 16 - with the Bunnies obliterating Parramatta's false sense of premiership contenderness on Thursday night, and then the Titans ending St George-Illawarra's season (well it was pretty much over before hand but is officially now) with an upset on Friday night. So a lot of us - myself included - were 0/2 to start the Round and although the Chooks ripped Brisbane apart for the second time this year - it was then the Warriors turn to upset the Knights and leave me (and mostly everyone else) 1/4 halfway through.

Normal tipping service resumed the rest of the weekend to get to 5/8 but it is the first time since Round 10 I've dropped 3 games in a Round - you can't complain about that.

So 5/8 means that the success rate has dropped from 70% last week a shade under at 69.5% - not horrible though so stick with me the rest of the way.

Round 17 Tips:
Thursday
Panthers over Broncos
This really could be as big a bloodbath as what the Roosters executed last week. Penrith aren't showing any signs of slowing down and aren't resting anyone they don't have to - so take the Panthers 30+ realistically. Brisbane are a basket case as a whole and their players can't wait for the season to end.

Friday
Knights over Sharks
Newcastle don't give you a good reason for you to give them the benefit of the doubt after last week's capitulation against the Warriors but the Sharks didn't set the world on fire in beating the woeful Cowboys. This is in Newcastle and Ponga/Pearce/Klemmer are fit... and Shaun Johnson isn't. Knights in a close one.

Storm over Rabbitohs
Harsh to pick against the Bunnies after they demoralised Parra last Thursday (and they get 2 full extra days rest over Melbourne - who are on the road) but Smith, Munster and Papenhuyzen look like they are primed to take a good enough Melbourne pack to the end of the year without giving up that 2nd spot on the ladder and a Brisbane 'home' semi. Souths also just lost Latrell for the year so that will hurt... the key for the Rabbitohs is their halves imposing themselves on the contest so Cook has some room to move around the ruck - Melbourne are really good but they aren't infallible. Storm just.

Saturday
Titans over Bulldogs
Have given Canterbury too many games on 'trust' against similarly bad opponents this season and got burned... so the Gold Coast (who are playing ok footy since AJ Brimson has returned) will get my tip here even though the Dogs show glimpses for periods - they have just fallen over when the blowtorch is applied time after time despite being well and truly in a few games.

Sea Eagles over Tigers
Harder to pick than a broken nose... come back on Saturday and double check if I'm still on Manly. The Tigers just decided to punt Benji Marshall for 2021 via press release so I'm expecting a massive game from the Benj to show them just how ridiculous it is that they invested in Josh Reynolds, Moses Mbye and Russell Packer for 2021 instead. Manly... maybe.

Roosters over Raiders
The last time theses two met it was a cracking Grand Final rematch... Canberra need to be more expansive with the ball in the first half to beat the Chooks though - the conservative opening halves have worn down bad opposition but Easts are certainly not that. Taking the Roosters as they can pretty much relegate Canberra to the bottom half of the Top 8 if they win this one.

Sunday
Eels over Warriors
Parra are really really really hard to tip after last week... and the Warriors showed you plenty of reasons to hope after crushing Newcastle. But... the Eels have a Top 4 spot to lose a firm grip on if they falter here and both Canberra and Souths win this week and the embarrassment of last week has to sting them into action on the Central Coast on Sunday.

Dragons over Cowboys
Saints were atrociously complacent last week when they rolled over for the Titans at Kogarah and as they confine the Cowboys to yet another loss the playing group will be looking at the ladder after Cronulla lose to Newcastle and think to themselves... yeah we might've wanted to win our two gimmies back to back against the Titans and Cowboys and we'd have been only two points out of the Top 8 with 3 games to play. Saints I guess...
