Tips for Round 17 2017

Eels over Bulldogs
After changing to the Bulldogs last week... I sincerely regretted it. Eels please.

Dragons over Titans
If I was confident the Titans would stay healthy I'd tip them here but you really can't avoid the Dragons in this one. Well if you want an upset - go for it with the Titans - heck The Solution is finally on the bench.

Storm over Broncos
Brisbane don't deserve to be tipped against here - they were great last week coming back to beat Canberra. But Melbourne get Cronk, Smith, Slater and Chambers back for this one so I'll go with them - especially given how they played without them in Adelaide.

Sharks over Roosters
Tough one to pick that's for sure - Roosters will miss Cordner and Taukeiaho big time in this forward matchup and for that reason I lean to Cronulla. But back your gut here if you disagree - I certainly struggled with this one.

Sea Eagles over Warriors
Manly deserve your faith - even though I haven't picked them nearly enough this season.

Raiders over Cowboys
Speaking of faith... don't pick Canberra. Problem is I can't pick the Cowboys without JT on the road against what is supposed to be a good team... I emphasise 'supposed to be'.

Knights over Tigers
Another case of good luck... Knights are bad, Tigers are maybe worse. But Tigers can score points and the Knights are hardly a quality unit. Guess the game is in Newcastle so... 

Panthers over Rabbitohs
Penrith may want to win this if they think they are a footy team worth worrying about at the pointy end of the season. Souths don't fit in that category.

Tips for Round 16 2017

Bulldogs over Warriors
I just do not trust the Warriors - esp with Foran out. Dogs for me.

Titans over Tigers
The Titans can still salvage their season... well at least that's the only reason I can see to tip with any inkling in this one. Tigers do nothing for me but the Titans of late have been much the same. Last chance Titans - stand up J Hayne.

Panthers over Cowboys
No JT is reason enough for me to pot the Cowboys for the rest of the season. A spot in the Top 8 just opened up kids...

Raiders over Broncos
If Wayne Bennett wasn't likely to rest some Origin players - the Broncos would be a sexy outsiders pick here. Canberra I guess.

Roosters over Storm
Storm's superstar boy band is out so Chooks (even with Cordner out as well). Enjoy no-superstar Saturday Adelaide... geesh this is poor scheduling.

Dragons over Knights
De Belin is a big out but even as poor as they've been of late you must pick St George Illawarra at home v the Knights.

Sharks over Sea Eagles
Have to pick Cronulla at home. Manly have proven good enough this year to make me look foolish... again.

Yikes... 4/8 and I apologise.

Look once Cronk withdrew Cronulla was the smart pick so not gutted there... Titans were woeful and Canberra blew it - so that happens. Then on Monday the Dogs were goodish and the Saints played more like the team I think they are - so it all means we ended up with 4 wrong.

Just 4 games this weekend - so let's aim for at least 3 correct tips.

And for those playing at home... as much as having Slater and Thurston back makes QLD infinitely more dangerous... one has to believe NSW can ride the momentum of last game into just their second Origin series win since 2005.

Tips for Round 15 2017

Rabbitohs over Titans

After not bothering to turn up last week - this is exactly the kind of game the Gold Coast turn around and do turn up for... then making you regret picking a pretty ordinary South Sydney team. But given Souths are close to full strength and the Titans don't have Jarryd Hayne and evidently picked up more injuries last weekend - you kind of have to stay with the home team Bunnies. But I'll let you pick the Titans if you wish - they are better than they showed last weekend.

Storm over Cowboys
Flip a coin... Cowboys have lost less core pieces (not by much) than Melbourne but Melbourne seem to inherently know how to play at a level that suggests they'll compete even with no Smith, Cronk, Chambers, Slater or Glasby. If you take the Cowboys you are relying on Coote, Granville and Taumalolo to have a bigger impact than Harris, Munster, Bromwich and Finucane. This ain't cut and dried by any stretch but it is in Melbourne.

Sharks over Tigers
Sharks down on some Origin troops but the Tigers are down Woods and Tedesco - so you've gotta pick Cronulla at home.

Eels over Dragons
Giving Corey Norman the benefit of the doubt after a poor return last week... if Parra hold Saints up front (which I think they can do) they have slightly more talent out wide to take advantage. But this is also coin flip territory based on what both teams served up last weekend.

6 from 7 - take it and run kids.

Canberra threw their game v Manly away in the 1st Half only to throw it away again in Golden Point - so 7/7 was soooo close.

Back to the 8 game schedule in Round 14 - then Origin II takes hold of all interest.

Still - these isolated full rounds are just as valuable to your Round 1 score - so be smart and don't reach too much.

Remember half the battle with tipping if you don't go superbly early is to stay in striking distance come the final few weeks so that if you can launch an all out offensive to try and make up some ground - you at least were close enough to do that. If you throw too many hail marys now - you might as well give up and stop tipping altogether.

Tips for Round 14 2017

Sharks over Storm

Brutal spot in the the mid-season malaise of the Origin months... mind you Cronulla fans didn't turn up for their season opener after their first title in like ever... so if they get 12k at Shark Park on Thursday night everyone will be stoked. Like Melbourne if Cameron Smith isn't carrying a bad injury... so if nothing comes to light before Thursday night I'm thinking Storm. BREAKING - No Cooper Cronk... back to the Sharks for the tip.

Sea Eagles over Knights
I've tipped games involving Manly incorrectly 11 of 12 times this season... that doesn't mean I haven't tipped Manly every game or against them... but whatever I've done too date has been WRONG! So yeah... Newcastle loom as specials now.

Broncos over Rabbitohs
Brisbane please. Just can't pick Souths I'm afraid.

Titans over Warriors
Jarryd Hayne at fullback and the Titans being poor last week in a winnable game is enough for me. And if you needed more - the Warriors are on the road (even at a place they've had success in the past) is compelling this season.

Panthers over Raiders
Canberra have run out of benefit of the doubt cards and the Panthers are no longer doubting themselves - even in a neutral place like Bathurst - you go with Penrith based on recent form. Remember Canberra's 'form' this year has been no guide whatsoever.

Eels over Cowboys
Yeah it is in Darwin but Parra should be raging hot specials given what they did to North Queensland minus Thurston - IN Townsville just a month or so ago.

Roosters over Tigers
Choooooooooooooks.

Dragons over Bulldogs
I think the Dogs can win this... this is the kind of game they get up for after being putrid for a while... but I have to pick Saints. I feel sick...

How 'bout those NSW BLUES!

The Sharks and Rabbits have the week off - as will a fair percentage of the Origin players from Wednesday night. So tipping this week won't be as straight forward as any of us would like.

Still - at a success rate of 63% for the year you need to stick with favourites if you've taken my tips every week - so no real big surprises below... but then again...

Tips for Round 13 2017

Storm over Knights
Even if Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk both withdrew given this game's proximity to Wednesday - you'd still pick the Storm. So pick the Storm.

Eels over Warriors
Won't trust the Warriors on the road - no matter how promising they may have looked in beating the Origin-player-less Broncos last weekend. Stick with Parra in your tips.

Dragons over Tigers
You know I want to pick the Tigers here but Saints must be your pick. As it must be mine.

Roosters over Broncos
No Mitchell Pearce apparently... so if you want to take the Broncos (assuming a good percentage of their Origin players backup) you'd be well within your rights to do so. This tip depends on who backs-up for Brisbane - but right now - Easts just.

Cowboys over Titans
I just don't know... Cowboys are playing at home so that is the only thing that appeals to me in making this tip. Hayne backs up for the Gold Coast and I could be swayed though... you saw what a motivated JH does for a footy team last night.

Raiders over Sea Eagles
I give Manly not nearly enough respect... but Canberra could make it 3 in a row this week and really reboot their season. Which come to think of it - Manly seems to have done already. Canberra... just go with it - it'll be a wild adventure for both of us.

Panthers over Bulldogs
Don't really like Moylan moving to five-eighth because he's already playing that role in attack at fullback and the team gets an extra ball player in Te Maire Martin... anyhoo. Dogs just lack the kind of game that makes you want to tip them... that's harsh but if you do pick them you're banking on them to hold the opposition to 10-14 points and that's a big ask...
