NRL 2011 - Round 2 NRL Preview Tips Teams Predictions Late Mail Fantasy News Odds

ROUND 2 NRL PREVIEW - 2011 SEASON
LOOKING TO AVOID THE 0-2 HOLE

For South Sydney, Brisbane, Warriors, Manly, Cronulla, Penrith and the Tigers - Round 2 of the 2011 Premiership offers them one of two choices.

Aim up and level their record at 1-1 or fall into a big hole at 0-2 and see all their pre-season optimism go out the window.

As for the Roosters, Cowboys, Eels, Storm, Dragons, Raiders, Knights and Bulldogs - life is good right now as all their hard work from the off-season has resulted in them sitting safely in the Top 8.

For them everything is rosy... it's just a shame it is only Round 1.

Check out the Round 2 Tipping Preview below.

THE NRL TWEET's ROUND 2 PREVIEW
FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:45pm (Local) 18 March @ Parramatta Stadium, Sydney.
Coming In...
EELS (7th) - RECORD 1-0 for 2 Points, 24.0ppg, 18.0apg, +6.
PANTHERS (16th) - RECORD 0-1 for 0 Points, 8.0ppg, 42.0apg, -34.
Head to Head Last 10...
Eels 6 Panthers 4 - Parramatta won an epic game of footy thanks to Jarryd Hayne last year but the teams have been relatively close since 2005.
Tuesday Team News...
EELS: Hayne, Burt, Whatuira, Morgan, Uaisele, Mortimer, Robson, Mannah, McGuire, Allgood, Hindmarsh (c), Lasalo, Horo. Bench: Keating, Shackleton, Smith, MoiMoi.
[Team Changes - Chris Walker is out with a toe injury and Paul Whatuira replaces him in the centres. After making a late start v Warriors - FuiFui MoiMoi has been named on the bench for Round 2.]
PANTHERS: Coote, M Gordon, Jennings, Tighe, Simmons, Burns, Walsh, Grant, Kingston, Civoniceva (c), Waterhouse, Plum, Lewis. Bench: McKendry, Bell, Purtell, Fatiaki.
[Team Changes - Sandor Earl and Masada Iosefa are the fall guys for the Panthers inept performance v Newcastle. David Simmons and rookie Sarafu Fatiaki come in. Michael Jennings is no certainty so Earl might get a reprieve, while Travis Burns will now likely spell Kevin Kingston at hooker.]
Wednesday Game Preview...
Have the Eels turned a corner after their win over the Warriors? Conversely are the Panthers as bad as they showed against Newcastle?
This 'Battle of the West' shapes up as an early test of each team's 2011 identity as the Panthers were surprising and the Eels were woeful in 2010. Parramatta will take in much the same team that won in Auckland and the Panthers have rung a couple of changes (although new signing Timana Tahu will not play and Michael Jennings is in doubt) but all Penrith Coach Matthew Elliott needs from his team is an attitude change.
I (for the moment) believe the Panthers will show they aren't a bad footy team on Friday Night and I've got them beating the Eels at Parramatta.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
[SMH Late Mail 18/3] Michael Jennings has been cleared and will play despite not being 100% last weekend due to a hamstring injury.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
PANTHERS To Win By 4 Points.

FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:45pm (Local) 18 March @ Canberra Stadium, Canberra.
Coming In...
RAIDERS (2nd) - RECORD 1-0 for 2 Points, 40.0ppg, 12.0apg, +28.
BRONCOS (9th) - RECORD 0-1 for 0 Points, 14.0ppg, 16.0apg, -2.
Head to Head Last 10...
Raiders 5 Broncos 5 - Canberra's win in Round 26 last year eliminated the Broncos from the playoffs and the Raiders have won 3 of the last 4 since 2009.
Tuesday Team News...
RAIDERS: Milne, Ferguson, Croker, Thompson, Vidot, McCrone, Orford, Learoyd-Lahrs, Buttriss, Shillington (c), Picker, Harrison (c), Fensom. Bench: Waddell, Miller, Tilse, Thurling, Galea.
[Team Changes - With prop Brett White Suspended 1 Week, Josh Miller joins the bench and Travis Waddell comes in for Alan Tongue who is out for 6 weeks with a shoulder injury. Matt Orford has been named at halfback for Sam Williams, but there is no Josh Dugan (yet) with David Milne at fullback. David Shillington and Bronson Harrison captain the team, while Danny Galea is 18th man and likely cover for Joe Picker who has a cork in his thigh. ]
BRONCOS: Hoffman, Yow Yeh, Beale, Reed, Gagai, Lockyer (c), Wallace, Thaiday, McCullough, Anderson, Glenn, Gillett, Parker. Bench: Hunt, Te'o, McGuire, Tronc.
[No Changes - Both Ben Hannant and Justin Hodges were not named for the Round 2 clash with Canberra. Hannant remains an outside chance of playing but given the game is on Friday he may he held over for another week.]
Wednesday Game Preview...
Given Canberra didn't have their 3 best players on the field against the Sharks (Dugan, Campese & Orford) - their 40-12 beating of the visitors sent a message to the rest of the competition that you have to stop the Canberra roll on or else. When Josh McCrone and a rookie half (Sam Williams) are looking like world beaters behind a dominant pack it makes people sit up and take notice. But the Broncos have a very very good pack of forwards themselves and although Ben Hannant may not play they should hold their own if they fix up their ball control. Darren Lockyer is far from past it and everyone should get their first look at whether Matt Orford has much left in the legs on Friday. Josh Dugan is long odds to play.
Canberra are at home where they have a sizable advantage and the Broncos were uninspiring last week, go the Raiders.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
[SMH Late Mail 18/3] Matt Orford will play and Joe Picker is highly likely to play as well for the Raiders. Ben Hannant will not turn out for the Broncos.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
RAIDERS To Win By 1 Point.

SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
5:35pm (Local) 19 March @ AAMI Park, Melbourne.
Coming In...
STORM (3rd) - RECORD 1-0 for 2 Points, 18.0ppg, 6.0apg, +12.
TITANS (11th) - RECORD 0-1 for 0 Points, 16.0ppg, 25.0apg, -9.
Head to Head Last 10...
Storm 2 Titans 3 - The Gold Coast have a great record against the Storm since they entered the competition in 2007 but their two losses to the Storm have been lopsided (44-4 in 2008 and 50-6 in 2007). Titans winners of the last 2 games.
Tuesday Team News...
STORM: Slater, Duffie, Nielsen, Champion, O'Neill, Widdop, Cronk, Blair, Smith (c), Lowe, Proctor, Manu, Hinchcliffe. Bench: Lowrie, Norrie, Thompson, Bromwich.
[Team Changes - Chase Stanley did his knee and is out for the season and Justin O'Neill copped a knock to his ankle. Beau Champion starts at centre and Anthony Quinn is likely to be on standby for O'Neill as a result.]
TITANS: Zillman, Gordon, Michaels, Toopi, Mead, Capewell, Prince (c), Bailey, Brown, White, Bird, Thompson, Harrison. Bench: Henderson, Tagataese, James, Campbell.
[No Changes - Mark Minichiello was named 18th man again and his progress will be checked later in the week to determine his chances of playing.]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Storm got the job done against Manly with their Big 3 of Smith, Cronk and Slater all contributing. While Manly didn't throw too much at them, the Storm will take great confidence from their hard fought victory and the Titans were outplayed at home against the Dragons. With no Nathan Friend or Anthony Laffranchi (and maybe still no Mark Minichiello) the advantage the Titans would normally have up front is negated.
Pick the Storm because this is at AAMI Park but the Titans require respect.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
[SMH Late Mail 18/3] Matt Duffie is in doubt due to the shoulder injury he played through in Round 1. Mark Minichiello will be a game time decision but looks likely to push his way into the 17.
[18/3 Notes] Although not part of the travelling squad the Titans do get some good news with Brad Meyers scheduled to play QLD Cup.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
STORM To Win By 6 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:35pm (Local) 19 March @ Leichhardt Oval, Sydney.
Coming In...
TIGERS (12th) - RECORD 0-1 for 0 Points, 14.0ppg, 24.0apg, -10.
WARRIORS (10th) - RECORD 0-1 for 0 Points, 18.0ppg, 24.0apg, -6.
Head to Head Last 10...
Tigers 4 Warriors 6 - The Tigers annihilated the Warriors 50-6 at Campbelltown last year but it has been mainly the Warriors in recent seasons (winning 6 of the last 8).
Tuesday Team News...
TIGERS: McKinnon, Tuqiri, Lawrence, Ayshford, Utai, Marshall, Lui, Gibbs, Farah (c), Galloway, Dwyer, Ellis, Heighington. Bench: Moltzen, Woods, Fifita, Payten.
[Team Changes - Liam Fulton is out with injury and Simon Dwyer starts, Gareth Ellis is in doubt with groin and ankle injuries but Bryce Gibbs is recalled after missing the Canterbury game with a knee injury. Aaron Woods keeps his spot in the 17 after débuting in Round 1.]
WARRIORS: Hohaia, Fisiiahi, Moon, Ropati, Inu, John, Seymour, Rapira, Packer, Mannering (c), Mateo, Luck. Bench: Berrigan, Lillyman, Matulino, Brown, Latimore.
[Team Changes - With James Maloney Suspended 1 Week the Warriors promote Isaac John to Five-Eighth, Manu Vatuvei's knee injury sees Krisnan Inu recalled and Jeremy Latimore joins a 5 man bench at the expense of Steve Rapira.]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Tigers never got into a groove against the Bulldogs and despite three classy contributions from Benji Marshall - were well beaten at ANZ. The Warriors themselves gave the Eels too big a lead in the first half and had too much to do in the 2nd half as they dropped a home game at Eden Park. The Tigers didn't establish themselves in the middle of the field against the Bulldogs and getting Bryce Gibbs back will help them there, while the Warriors lose two of their most influential players with Manu Vatuvei and James Maloney unavailable.
Going with the Tigers at Leichhardt and they should win this if they want people to believe they can build on last year's Preliminary Final appearance.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
[CHANGE] The Warriors lose Glen Fisiiahi to a concussion and Kevin Locke comes in to replace him on the wing. Gareth Ellis and Bryce Gibbs remain in doubt for the Tigers.
[SMH Late Mail 18/3] Gareth Ellis remains in doubt and will be given til Saturday to prove his fitness due to an ankle injury picked up against the Bulldogs.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
TIGERS To Win By 10 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
8:35pm (Local) 19 March @ Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville.
Coming In...
COWBOYS (8th) - RECORD 1-0 for 2 Points, 16.0ppg, 14.0apg, +2.
KNIGHTS (1st) - RECORD 1-0 for 2 Points, 42.0ppg, 8.0apg, +34.
Head to Head Last 10...
Cowboys 4 Knights 6 - The Cowboys registered one of their five victories in 2010 against the Knights at home in Round 20 last year but have been slayed by the Knights in 4 of their previous 6 meetings since 2008.
Tuesday Team News...
COWBOYS: Bowen, Graham, Tupou, Tonga, Bani, Thompson, Thurston (c), Scott (c), Payne, Tamou, Cooper, Hall, Johnson. Bench: Jones, L Ah Mau, T Sims, A Sims, R Thorby.
[Team ChangesScott Bolton is out with a calf tear. Ricky Thorby joins the 5 man bench with Gavin Cooper starting and Tariq Sims elevated into jersey #16.]
KNIHGTS: Gidley (c), McManus, Sa'u, W Naiqama, Uate, Henry, Mullen, Kaufusi, Hilder, Tuimavave, Taia, Ciraldo, Houston. Bench: Rogers, Paterson, Fa'aoso, Tolar, Edwards.
[Team Changes - Kurt Gidley has been named despite a back injury and Shannon McDonnell has been placed on standby. Neville Costigan is out with a broken arm with Cameron Ciraldo starting, Isaac De Gois is replaced by Matt Hilder at hooker and Joel Edwards and Ben Rogers coming on to the bench. There is no Adam MacDougall for a second straigth week.]
Wednesday Game Preview...
Newcastle were impressive in their win over the Panthers but the Panthers were atrocious, so this is a good test of the Knights in Townsville. The same can be said of the Cowboys who while solid against the Broncos - were not convincing. If Kurt Gidley can't play then the Cowboys become a runaway favourite... and boy that doesn't sound strange given North Queensland won just 5 games in 2010.
Taking the Cowboys but the Knights offer great value as a roughie.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
[CHANGE] Kurt Gidley was ruled out by the Knights on Thursday with a back injury and Shannon McDonnell will replace him at fullback.
[SMH Late Mail 18/3] Gidley is definitely out for the Knights and Ricky Thorby will be 18th man for the Cowboys.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
COWBOYS To Win By 2 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
SUNDAY FOOTBALL
              V
2:05pm (Local) 20 March @ ANZ Stadium, Sydney.
Coming In...
RABBITOHS (13th) - RECORD 0-1 for 0 Points, 29.0ppg, 40.0apg, -11.
BULLDOGS (5th) - RECORD 1-0 for 2 Points, 24.0ppg, 14.0apg, +10.
Head to Head Last 10...
Rabbitohs 3 Bulldogs 6 1 Draw - Canterbury have been the dominant team since 2006, winning 6 of the last 8 games.
Tuesday Team News...
RABBITOHS: Wesser, Merritt, Farrell, Inglis, Talanoa, Sutton, Sandow, Stuart, Luke, Asotasi (c), Pettybourne, Taylor, Tyrrell. Bench: Ross, McPherson, Crocker, McQueen.
[Team Changes - Eddy Pettybourne and Dave Tyrrell start for injured forwards Sam Burgess and Ben Lowe. Michael Crocker comes onto the bench for Scott Geddes who did his Achilles and is joined by outside back Chris McQueen.]
BULLDOGS: Barba, Turner, Morris, Idris, Goodwin, Keating, Hodkinson, Tolman, Ennis, Kasiano, Foster, Ryan (c), Stagg. Bench: Paea, Pritchard, Payne, Roberts.
[Team Changes - No official changes from the team that beat the Tigers, although Josh Morris is awaiting scans on what looked to be a semi-serious knee injury. Morris was in a leg brace after the match and although optimistic that scans would clear him - he is in serious doubt for Round 2 (has now been ruled out for at least a month). Jonathon Wright or Ben Roberts are in line to replace him.]
Wednesday Game Preview...
South Sydney were terrible against the Roosters yet found 25 minutes of good footy amongst it all and should have won the game. Chris Sandow was good and bad once again but the signs are there that he is gradually getting better. The injuries piled up for Souths on Friday but they still have some serious talent. The Bulldogs were better than expected Monday but lost their most dangerous player in Josh Morris to a long term knee injury and I'm not sold on their style revamp just yet (if there has been one at all).
It's at ANZ so neither team has any advantage, backing the Bunnies to show those 25 minutes weren't the exception Friday Night and win.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
[SMH Late Mail 18/3] Toyota Cup centre Tim Lafai is the street corner tip to replace injured centre Josh Morris although Parramatta recruit Jonathan Wright, Junior Tia-Kilifi or utility Dene Halatau may get the call up. There is talk that Greg Inglis has an adductor strain but the Rabbitohs refuted this claim late on Thursday and were adamant he'll line up on Sunday.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
RABBITOHS To Win By 7 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
SUNDAY FOOTBALL
              V
3:05pm (Local) 20 March @ Sydney Football Stadium, Sydney.
Coming In...
ROOSTERS (4th) - RECORD 1-0 for 2 Points, 40.0ppg, 29.0apg, +11.
SEA EAGLES (14th) - RECORD 0-1 for 0 Points, 6.0ppg, 18.0apg, -12.
Head to Head Last 10...
Roosters 2 Sea Eagles 8 - The Roosters won their only meeting in 2010 but had lost 8 of the previous 9 games to Manly since 2005.
Tuesday Team News...
ROOSTERS: Minichiello, Perrett, Kenny-Dowall, Linnett, Leilua, Anasta (c), Pearce, Ryles, Friend, Kennedy, Nu'uausala, Aubusson, Myles. Bench: Waerea-Hargreaves, Masoe, Riddell, Symonds, Carney.
[Team Changes - Todd Carney has been named as 18th man for the clash with Manly. If fit he'll likely start and either Riddell or Symonds would make way]
SEA EAGLES: B Stewart, Robertson, Hopoate, T Williams, D Williams, K Foran, Cherry-Evans, Rose, Ballin, Kite, Watmough, Galuvao, G Stewart (c). Bench: Seu Seu, Buhrer, Robinson, Mauro.
[Team Changes - With prop Jason King Suspended 1 Week, George Rose starts and Tim Robinson comes onto the bench. William Hopoate has been named in the centres despite a shoulder injury and David Williams comes onto the wing for the injured Jamie Lyon.]
Wednesday Game Preview...
Manly had a golden opportunity to start the season well against a developing Storm team and looked vastly under-done themselves. Now they lose Jamie Lyon and Jason King and they might be staring down the barrel of an 0-2 start. The Roosters had a good start in beating Souths but truth be told should have lost the game.
Given the Roosters might get Carney back - that makes them hard to resist.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
[SMH Late Mail 18/3] Todd Carney will play (no word on whether he will start or come off the bench) after getting through training all week, Mark Riddell could be the unlucky one to miss out after being barely used against the Rabbitohs.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
ROOSTERS To Win By 8 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:05pm (Local) 21 March @ Toyota Stadium, Cronulla.
Coming In...
SHARKS (15th) - RECORD 0-1 for 0 Points, 12.0ppg, 40.0apg, -28.
DRAGONS (6th) - RECORD 1-0 for 2 Points, 25.0ppg, 16.0apg, +9.
Head to Head Last 10...
Sharks 5 Dragons 5 - Although they've split the past ten games, the Dragons are winners of four straight since 2009.
Tuesday Team News...
SHARKS: Gardner, Wright, Collis, Best, Williams, Kelly, Graham, Snowden, Morris, Douglas, Smith, Tupou, Gallen. Bench: Cordoba, Wright, Flanagan, Pomeroy, Mannah, Tautai.
[Team Changes - With hooker Paul Aiton Suspended 1 Week the Sharks have promoted Stuart Flanagan to the bench. Taulima Tautai also joins a six man bench along with Ben Pomeroy. Jason Bukuya's hamstring injury that kept him out of Round 1 is more serious than first thought and he is out until Round 6.]
DRAGONS: Boyd, Morris, Gasnier, Cooper, Nightingale, Soward, Hornby (c), Hunt, Fien, Weyman, Scott, Creagh, Prior. Bench: Greenfield, Rein, Merrin, Green.
[No Changes - Mitch Rein keeps his spot after being a late inclusion for Kyle Stanley v Gold Coast in Round 1]
Wednesday Game Preview...
It's incredibly hard to even entertain the thought of a Cronulla victory given that St.George-Illawarra look in mid-season form already. Cronulla tried hard against Canberra but even though their forward pack matched up well with the Raiders - they were steam-rolled and errors just compounded their demise. The Dragons on the other hand never looked worried by the Titans (who are a good footy team) and they won't be worried by the Sharks in this one.
Having said that - I don't expect it to be a blow-out but the Dragons will win.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
[SMH Late Mail 18/3] Cronulla and St.George-Illawarra are fit - with the Sharks having to decide between John Mannah, Broderick Wright, Taulima Tautai and Ben Pomeroy for the two bench spots providing Josh Cordoba and Stuart Flanagan hold their places.
[Injury Alert 18/3] Report on Friday that Jason Nightingale and Dan Hunt are in serious doubt for this clash after breaking down at training. Peni Tagive would come in for Nightingale while there are many forward options for Wayne Bennett to cover Hunt.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
DRAGONS To Win By 12 Points.
