NRL 2011 - Round 6 NRL Preview Tips Teams Predictions Late Mail Fantasy News Odds

ROUND 6 NRL PREVIEW - 2011 SEASON
Storm and Dragons rising to the top again...
The Grand Final that perhaps should have been last year (well had the Storm not engaged in some creative accounting) is now well and truly on the cards for 2011.
Both Melbourne and St.George-Illawarra have flexed their premiership muscles with wins over the Bulldogs in the last two weeks - suggesting that any team that wants to fancy itself as a challenger will need to lift three or four gears to get close to the favourites.
As for the Titans and Raiders... they'd just be happy to win a game at this stage let alone think about a premiership.

THE NRL TWEET's ROUND 6 PREVIEW
FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:45pm (Local) 15 April @ ANZ Stadium, Sydney.
Coming In...
EELS (14th) - RECORD 2-3 for 4 Points, -58.
BULLDOGS (7th) - RECORD 3-2 for 6 Points, -10.
Head to Head Last 10...
EELS 8 BULLDOGS 2 - Parramatta have won the last 4 games and have dominated the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium winning 8 of the last 9 games there.
Tuesday Team News...
PAR: Hayne, Burt, Reddy, Loko, Atkins, Mortimer, Robson, Mannah, McGuire, MoiMoi, Hindmarsh (c), Lasalo, Horo. Bench: Rogers, Shackleton, Allgood, Webb, Smith.
[Team Changes - Despite getting spanked by the Storm, Stephen Kearney has kept the faith with his team. Jacob Loko stays at centre and Jordan Atkins on the wing, while Ben Smith could miss out altogether after being named on an extended bench. Carl Webb and Casey McGuire are back, with Anthony Mitchell making way. ]
CBY: Barba, Turner, Lafai, Idris, Goodwin, Keating, Hodkinson, Tolman, Ennis, Paea, Pritchard, Ryan (c), Stagg. Bench: Armit, Millington, Payne, Halatau, Hodgson.
[Team Changes - No room for Sam Kasiano or Jake Foster after both were omitted late against the Dragons. Grant Millington comes onto the bench with Chris Armit and Michael Hodgson who replaced Foster and Kasiano. Jamal Idris has a corked thigh but has been named to play. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Eels shift another home game to ANZ Stadium and once again effectively hand home ground advantage back to the team they host. They got beaten by Souths at ANZ in Round 3 and this time Canterbury get a 'home game' courtesy of the Eels. Despite their good record at ANZ against the Dogs - Parramatta won't enter the game here as favourites despite both teams coming off losses in Round 5. The Storm crushed the Eels and the Bulldogs fell to the Dragons - so there's not a lot of form to go on here.
Canterbury were competition leaders a couple of weeks ago and despite losing their last two games, it was against superior opposition. Plus the Eels don't look very good at all, so take the Dogs.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
SMH Late Mail 15/4 - Jamal Idris has overcome a corked thigh enough to play. Carl Webb, Billy Rogers or Ben Smith will drop off the Eels bench.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
BULLDOGS To Win By 8 Points.

FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:45pm (Local) 15 April @ Skilled Park, Gold Coast.
Coming In...
TITANS (16th) - RECORD 1-4 for 2 Points, -52.
TIGERS (6th) - RECORD 3-2 for 6 Points, +14.
Head to Head Last 10...
TITANS 4 TIGERS 3 - They split their 2010 clashes with the Tigers winning at Campbelltown 15-14 in Round 18 and the Titans taking out Round 26 by 21-18.
Tuesday Team News...
GLD: Capewell, Michaels, Tonga, Thompson, Mead, Zillman, Prince (c), Bailey, Friend, White, Bird, Minichiello, Harrison. Bench: Henderson, Tagataese, James, Ridge, O'Dwyer.
[Team Changes - Greg Bird will return from suspension but Ashley Harrison is no certainty with a hamstring strain. Anthony Laffranchi is out 6-8 weeks with an ankle injury. Luke Capewell keeps William Zillman at five-eighth, while Ben Ridge goes back to the bench as does Ryan James. ]
WTG: McKinnon, Ryan, Ayshford, Brown, Utai, Marshall, Moltzen, Gibbs, Farah (c), Payten, Dwyer, Ellis, Heighington. Bench: Miller, Fifita, A Schirnack, Woods.
[Team Changes - The return of Beau Ryan from a groin injury softens the loss of Geoff Daniela for the season with an arm injury. Keith Galloway is out with a groin injury so Todd Payten starts and Aaron Woods gets a recall from the Under 20s on the bench. Gareth Ellis was a late starter against the Bunnies and he's listed to start again here. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Titans are struggling mightily and despite the return of Greg Bird - still look desperately thin on quality out wide. Ashley Harrison is no certainty to return and although the Tigers lost Keith Galloway and Geoff Daniela from last week's winning team - they deserve favouritism here.
Normally the Titans at home is not a situation where you back against them but Scott Prince is in terrible touch and Benji Marshall is going as good as he ever has. Take the Tigers but I expect it to be close.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
INJURY UPDATE - Ashley Harrison has confirmed he will play Friday but there is a rumour that Luke Bailey is in doubt.
SMH Late Mail 15/4 - Harrison will play, while Ben Ridge (cork) seems likely to force Luke O'Dwyer into the 18th man spot. The Tigers look like being 1-17.
The DT 15/4 Reports - Beau Ryan did not fly to Queensland with Sam Latu or Sean Meaney their mooted replacements.
TEAM CHANGE? There's a strong tip that Wade McKinnon is also out for the Tigers. With Tim Moltzen moving to fullback, Jacob Miller starting and a suggestion that Junior Moors and Mark Flanagan will come onto the bench.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
TIGERS To Win By 4 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
5:35pm (Local) 16 April @ Brookvale Oval, Sydney.
Coming In...
SEA EAGLES (5th) - RECORD 3-2 for 6 Points, +17.
WARRIORS (11th) - RECORD 2-3 for 4 Points, -7.
Head to Head Last 10...
SEA EAGLES 7 WARRIORS 3 - Manly won both meetings in 2010 and have won 5 of the last 6.
Tuesday Team News...
MAN: B Stewart, Robertson, Lyon (c), Matai, Hopoate, K Foran, Cherry-Evans, King (c), Ballin, Kite, Watmough, Galuvao, G Stewart. Bench: Seu Seu, Buhrer, Rose, Mauro, Robinson, Oldfield, T Williams.
[Team Changes - Brett Stewart has been named again but the listing of Michael Oldfield and Tony Williams on the bench again suggests he's no certainty. Anthony Watmough and Terence Seu Seu are included after having a week off to have a long hard look at themselves, while Daniel Harrison has been sent back to NSW Cup. ]
WAR: Hohaia, Tupou, Berrigan, Mannering (c), Inu, Mateo, Maloney, Sam Rapira, Heremaia, Lillyman, Brown, Taylor, Luck. Bench: Latimore, Matulino, Ta'ai, Packer, Lousi.
[Team Changes - Lance Hohaia starts for the injured Glen Fisiiahi, while Elijah Taylor keeps his starting spot in the second row. Russell Packer and Sione Lousi join an extended bench. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
Manly found a way to steal their game with Cronulla and the fact they left it til the last 20 minutes to get on the board suggests their attack isn't as coherent as it needs to be. Having said that they still came up with the big play when needed and Brett Stewart may return here. The Warriors took it up to the Roosters and ground them down in the greasy conditions in Auckland and having won two on the trot will fancy themselves here.
Manly have been riding a roller-coaster of late and the Warriors are just the kind of team that can end the joyride with a thud. Although Watmough and possibly Brett Stewart return for Manly, I think the Warriors are good things here.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
SMH Late Mail 15/4 - Brett Stewart's hamstring still isn't right and he will not play. William Hopoate goes to fullback and either Michael Oldfield or Tony Williams will come onto the wing. Joe Galuvao and George Rose are carrying niggles but should play.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
WARRIORS To Win By 7 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:35pm (Local) 16 April @ BlueTongue Stadium, Gosford.
Coming In...
ROOSTERS (9th) - RECORD 2-3 for 4 Points, +2.
BRONCOS (2nd) - RECORD 4-1 for 8 Points, +39.
Head to Head Last 10...
ROOSTERS 3 BRONCOS 7 - The Roosters broke a 5 match winning streak by the Broncos by winning both games in 2010.
Tuesday Team News...
SYD: Minichiello, J Carney, Aubusson, Kenny-Dowall, Leilua, T Carney, Pearce, Ryles, Friend, Kennedy, Anasta (c), Nu'uausala, Myles. Bench: Waerea-Hargreaves, Masoe, Riddell, Conn, Symonds.
[Team Changes - Jason Ryles starts for Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Mark Riddell and Tom Symonds rejoin the bench at the expense of Phil Graham. ]
BRI: Beale, Reed, Te'o, Hodges, Yow Yeh, Lockyer (c), Wallace, Hannant, McCullough, Thaiday, Glenn, Gillett, Parker. Bench: Dodds, Carlaw, Kenny, Norman.
[Team Changes - There is some doubt over Mitchell Dodds who got KO'd against the Knights but everyone else should retain their spots. Josh McGuire or Shane Tronc would be the most likely replacement for Dodds. Josh Hoffman is another week away according to the Broncos. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Broncos are outsiders here despite their stunning defensive efforts in recent weeks and the Roosters struggling to find any consistency. Plus this game is on neutral soil in Gosford so the fact the Roosters are favourites is a touch surprising. But the Roosters are a team that can look up and down for a few weeks and then something clicks and they blow a side away - and this game shapes as a golden opportunity to test their attacking class against the form defensive team of the competition.
I still can't accept the Broncos as a legitimate premiership threat until I see them shut down a good attacking team in decent conditions (the Knights got a wet track on Monday) and the Roosters are a very good attacking team. I'll pick the Roosters but am ready to eat humble pie on the Broncos if they get up.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
TEAM CHANGE - Brian Smith announced that Todd Carney isn't fit for this week's clash. Braith Anasta goes to five-eighth and Tom Symonds starts in the second row. The Broncos also lost Ben Te'o on Thursday after a hairline fracture was found in his arm during the week.
SMH Late Mail 15/4 - Dale Copley or Dane Gagai will come in for Ben Te'o if coach Anthony Griffin decides not to play Corey Norman on the wing and draft in a forward. The other option is bringing Matt Gillett or Alex Glenn into the centres. The Roosters confirmed Todd Carney was out on Thursday.
The DT 15/4 Reports - Mitchell Dodds will play despite a concussion suffered last week for Brisbane.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
ROOSTERS To Win By 10 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:35pm (Local) 16 April @ Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville.
Coming In...
COWBOYS (4th) - RECORD 3-2 for 6 Points, +26.
RAIDERS (15th) - RECORD 1-4 for 2 Points, -25.
Head to Head Last 10...
COWBOYS 5 RAIDERS 5 - North Queensland won Dairy Farmers in Round 14 (16-8) but were smashed in the return game at Canberra Stadium in Round 26 (48-4)
Tuesday Team News...
NQL: Bowen, Graham, Winterstein, Tonga, Fai-Fai Loa, Thompson, Thurston (c), Scott (c), Payne, A Sims, Bolton, Hall, Johnson. Bench: Segeyaro, L Ah Mau, T Sims, Thorby, I Ah Mau.
[Team Changes - The leadership group suspended James Tamou and Blake Leary for an off-field indiscretion during the week and they will miss this round. Ashton Sims and Scott Bolton start with Gavin Cooper suspended for a lifting tackle for Round 6. Isaak Ah Mau and Ricky Thorby are the new faces on the bench, while Antonio Winterstein keeps his spot ahead of Will Tupou. ]
CAN: Ferguson, Robinson, Croker, Thompson, Vidot, McCrone, Williams, Learoyd-Lahrs, Buttriss, Shillington (c), Thurling, Harrison (c), Fensom. Bench: Waddell, Miller, Galea, White.
[Team Changes - Matt Orford carried a back injury into the Penrith game and having Petero Civoniceva knee him in the back during the game didn't hlep... and now Orford has been ruled out by the medial staff. So no he hasn't been dropped. Sam Williams comes in at halfback. Glen Buttriss starts for Travis Waddell and Joel Thompson returns in the centres for James Stuart. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Raiders and Cowboys are going into two very different directions based on how they finished last season. Canberra were expected to contend and are 1-4, while the Cowboys were basically wooden spooners and are 3-2 and playing quite well. In Townsville on a Saturday Night - Johnathan Thurston and Matt Bowen usually have a field day but don't rule out the Raiders forward pack pulling their fingers out and David Furner opening up the attacking game plan in order to get a win.
The Raiders will beat someone soon on the back of their pack and if they were playing the Cowboys of 2010, it would be this week as the Cowboys pack would have rolled over and surrendered very early on. But this is 2011 and the Cowboys might have turned the corner... as a result I've changed my mind about five times with this pick and the winner is... North Queensland.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
Canberra Times 14/04  - David Shilington has a knee complaint and is a minor doubt but Joe Picker (Ankle) and Dane Tilse (Hammy) have trained and could make the trip to Townsville. For the Cowboys - Ricky Thorby is out with a groin strain and Will Tupou has been added to the squad.
SMH Late Mail 15/4 - Canberra will decide on Joe Picker and Dane Tilse before travelling to Townsville. The Cowboys made their change yesterday with Ricky Thorby ruled out.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
COWBOYS To Win By 4 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
SUNDAY FOOTBALL
              V
2:05pm (Local) 17 April @ AusGrid Stadium, Newcastle.
Coming In...
KNIGHTS (8th) - RECORD 2-3 for 4 Points, +19.
SHARKS (10th) - RECORD 2-3 for 4 Points, -4.
Head to Head Last 10...
KNIGHTS 5 SHARKS 5 - Newcastle won 21-10 in Round 18 and the Sharks won 26-6 in Round 7 last year.
Tuesday Team News...
NEW: W Naiqama, McManus, Sa'u, MacDougall, Uate, Gidley (c), Mullen, Kaufusi, Hilder, Tuimavave, Paterson *suspended*, Houston, Edwards. Bench: De Gois, Mika, Fa'aoso, Tolar, Karawana.
[Team Changes - Cory Paterson will not play after taking a week off for kneeing in the Brisbane game, while Isaac De Gois has an arm injury that will likely see him miss this match and possibly longer. Given the Knights played Monday Night - expect their team to be confirmed later in the week as Wes Naiqama and Dan Tolar are also carrying injuries. ]
CRO: Gardner, M Wright, Pomeroy, Best, Williams, Kelly, Graham, Snowden, Aiton, Douglas, Smith, Tupou, Gallen (c). Bench: Cordoba, B Wright, Flanagan, Collis, Mannah.
[Team Changes - No changes whatsoever for the Sharks. Dean Collis remains listed on the bench but has yet to feature since Round 1. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
NewTinkle is a buzz with the signing of Wayne Bennett for 2012 but everyone needs to remind the town that it is still actually 2011 and the Sharks are going to be a tough opponent on Sunday. The Knights put everything into their game on Monday night and got beaten and picked up a few key injuries to De Gois, Tolar and Naiqama which leaves them ripe for the picking by the Sharks. Cronulla should have beaten Manly and will be out to prove that their current form is no fluke.
Cronulla's forward pack looks far healthier than Newcastle's (who also lost Cory Paterson to suspension) and it'll tip the balance of power here. Take the Sharks to win at AusGrid.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
SMH Late Mail 15/4 - Isaac De Gois is out with an arm/thumb injury and Con Mika will start for the suspended Cory Paterson. Mark Taufua comes back from injury on the bench. Johnny Mannah will play ahead of Dean Collis on the Cronulla bench. Adam MacDougall is also in serious doubt for the Knights with an arm injury, Shannon McDonnell is in line to come in.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
SHARKS To Win By 6 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
SUNDAY FOOTBALL
              V
3:05pm (Local) 17 April @ Centrebet Stadium, Penrith.
Coming In...
PANTHERS (13th) - RECORD 2-3 for 4 Points, -34.
STORM (1st) - RECORD 4-1 for 8 Points, +64.
Head to Head Last 10...
PANTHERS 2 STORM 8 - Melbourne have dominated the Panthers since 2006 - winning the past 7 games.
Tuesday Team News...
PEN: M Gordon, Earl, Jennings, Tighe, Simmons, Burns, Walsh, Grant, Kingston, Civoniceva (c), Waterhouse, Plum, Fatiaki. Bench: Seluini, Bell, Tahu, McKendry.
[Team Changes - Prop Sam McKendry was a late starter against Canberra and is listed on the bench here. There is no sign of Lachlan Coote either in an unchanged team. Luke Walsh remains in doubt with a shoulder injury however. ]
MEL: Slater, Duffie, Nielsen, Champion, Quinn, Widdop, Cronk, Bromwich, Smith (c), Norrie, Blair, Proctor, Lowrie. Bench: Hinchcliffe, Vea, Woolnough, Lowe, O'Neill.
[Team Changes - Anthony Quinn holds his wing spot ahead of Justin O'Neill who is listed on an extended bench with Jaiman Lowe. Jesse Bromwich gets a chance to start for the injured Troy Thompson. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Panthers went back to their steady as she goes game plan against Canberra and the Raiders fumbled their way into their trap. But the final 36-10 scoreline flattered the Panthers who weren't great by any stretch but still a win is a win. The Storm were fantastic in dismantling the Eels 38-0 at AAMI and despite this game being on the road should be red hot favourites.
Penrith need a good performance here even if they lose to convince themselves that they've turned a corner. The Storm should win if they keep their form from the last fortnight going but their last away trip ended in a 34-6 defeat to the Cowboys. But you have to pick Melbourne.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
SMH Late Mail 15/4 - Luke Walsh (Shoulder) should play for the Panthers and Justin O'Neill will be 18th man for the Storm.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
STORM To Win By 6 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:05pm (Local) 18 April @ ANZ Stadium, Sydney.
Coming In...
RABBITOHS (12th) - RECORD 2-3 for 4 Points, -28.
DRAGONS (3rd) - RECORD 4-1 for 8 Points, +37.
Head to Head Last 10...
RABBITOHS 2 DRAGONS 8 - St.George-Illawarra won both games in 2010 and also won the Charity Shield clash in February.
Tuesday Team News...
SOU: Wesser, Merritt, Farrell, Inglis, Talanoa, Sutton, Sandow, Asotasi (c), Luke, S Burgess, Taylor, Tyrrell, Crocker. Bench: Ross, McPherson, McQueen, Peats.
[Team Changes - Sam Burgess moves to the front row with news that Luke Stuart will miss the season with a knee injury. Nathan Peats is the new man in the 17 that lost to the Tigers on Friday Night, with Michael Crocker starting at lock and Dave Tyrrell in the second row. ]
STI: Boyd, Morris, Gasnier, Cooper, Nightingale, Soward, Hornby (c), Hunt, Fien, Merrin, Scott, Creagh, Prior. Bench: Green, Young, Cuthbertson, Stanley.
[Team Changes - There is some doubt over skipper Ben Hornby with a few niggles and if he is out expect Nathan Fien to start at halfback and Dean Young to start at hooker. But this is the same 17 that beat the Bulldogs on Sunday at the SCG. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
South Sydney missed out on Wayne Bennett but they have more immediate concerns after being out-enthused and exposed by a superior game plan against the Tigers. Losing Luke Stuart for the season also takes away another reliable forward and he is a huge loss. The Dragons were superb in beating the Bulldogs at the SCG and seem to be gelling into that grinding monster that easily won the Minor Premiership last season.
The Rabbitohs must start fast and put the Dragons under scoreboard pressure early... because if the Dragons get a 8-10 point lead they'll defend the Bunnies out of it. St.George-Illawarra for me.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
SMH Late Mail 15/4 - Both teams report they will be unchanged on Monday Night. Although there is a suggestion on NRL.com that Michael Weyman might be a late starter for the Dragons.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
DRAGONS To Win By 8 Points.
