NRL 2011 - Round 5 NRL Preview Tips Teams Predictions Late Mail Fantasy News Odds

ROUND 5 NRL PREVIEW - 2011 SEASON
Welcome back Melbourne...
The Bulldogs found out first hand that the Storm are far from finished as a Premiership force without Greg Inglis and Co. and maybe Canterbury's own dreams of a title challenge were tempered by the way they were beaten.
The good news is that no team is without a win as we enter Round 5 - the bad news is that means when it comes to tipping (once again) finding a winner is extremely tough.

THE NRL TWEET's ROUND 5 PREVIEW
FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:45pm (Local) 8 April @ Sydney Football Stadium, Sydney.
Coming In...
TIGERS (11th) - RECORD 2-2 for 4 Points, -10.
RABBITOHS (10th) - RECORD 2-2 for 4 Points, -4.
Head to Head Last 10...
TIGERS 6 RABBITOHS 4 - Souths won both games last year scoring 84 points to 40 and have won 3 of the last 4 in total.
Tuesday Team News...
WTG: McKinnon, Brown, Ayshford, Daniela, Utai, Marshall, Moltzen, Gibbs Farah (c), Galloway, Dwyer, A Schirnack, Heighington. Bench: Miller, Fifita, Woods, Payten.
[Team Changes - There is still no Beau Ryan as Mitch Brown and Matt Utai hold the wing spots. Geoff Daniela is named at centre with Tim Moltzen at half and rookie Jacob Miller on the bench. Bryce Gibbs starts at prop and Andrew Fifita moves to the bench. There is an outside chance that Gareth Ellis could make an appearance on Friday. ]
SOU: Wesser, Merritt, Inglis, Farrell, Talanoa, Sutton, Sandow, Asotasi (c), Luke, Stuart, S Burgess, Taylor, Tyrrell. Bench: Ross, McPherson, Crocker, McQueen.
[Team Changes - Sam Burgess is named for the second week in the team but this week he looms as a more likely starter after returning from a shoulder injury. Dylan Farrell hurt his shoulder against Manly and may be in some doubt and Rhys Wesser is no certainty to return from a hamstring injury despite being named. Kane Morgan and Nathan Peats miss out. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Bunnies have strung together two good performances after their disappointing start to the season and will enter this game with plenty of confidence in their attack. Getting Sam Burgess back from a shoulder injury should also help their defensive mindset but don't rule out the Tigers here just because they are down on troops.
If there is one area the Bunnies seem to be still struggling with it is fitness at the back end of each half and Benji Marshall is just the player to take advantage of that with or without Chris Lawrence and Lote Tuqiri.
There ws a rumour that Gareth Ellis will try and be a late starter and that certainly helps the Tigers cause here and it was confirmed on Thursday morning - he will play.
The game is back at South Sydney's old home ground - the SFS - but it is a Tigers home game officially... either way I think the Tigers might surprise a few people here and beat the Rabbitohs.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
SMH Late Mail 8/4 - Gareth Ellis is a confirmed starter with Alan Schirnack or Jacob Miller making way. Souths will give Rhys Wesser & Dylan Farrell until the last minute, while Sam Burgess will play. Junior Vai Vai is on standby for Farrell.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
TIGERS To Win By 8 Points.

FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:45pm (Local) 8 April @ Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville.
Coming In...
COWBOYS (6th) - RECORD 2-2 for 4 Points, +16.
TITANS (15th) - RECORD 1-3 for 2 Points, -42.
Head to Head Last 10...
COWBOYS 3 TITANS 4 - They split their two clashes in 2010, the Cowboys won 32-18 in Round 4 and the Titans won 37-18 in Round 23.
Tuesday Team News...
NQL: Bowen, Graham, Tupou, Tonga, Fai-Fai Loa, Thompson, Thurston (c), Scott (c), Payne, Tamou, Cooper, Hall, Johnson. Bench: Segeyaro, L Ah Mau, T Sims, A Sims, S Bolton, A Winterstein.
[Team Changes - Neil Henry has included Scott Bolton and Antonio Winterstein on an extended bench. Bolton hurt his calf in Round 1 and Winterstein broke his jaw in the trials - Ashton Sims and Will Tupou appear to be the players under the most pressure to hold their spots if both are ruled fit to play on Friday. ]
GLD: Zillman, Michaels, Tonga, Thompson, Mead, Capewell, Prince (c), Bailey, Friend, White, Laffranchi, Minichiello, Ridge. Bench: Henderson, Tagataese, James, Brown, O'Dwyer.
[Team Changes - Greg Bird will miss this week through suspension and Preston Campbell and Brad Meyers picked up injuries last week and are also out. Scott Prince will have to pass a fitness test on his hamstring later in the week to play and Nathan Friend looks set to play his first game of the year after shoulder surgery. Luke Capewell comes back in at five-eighth and Luke O'Dwyer joins a 5 man bench. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Titans may have broken their duck with a win over Canberra last Saturday but scraping over in the 80th minute and then kicking a field goal in extra time isn't exactly a convincing sign they have turned the corner. They may get Scott Prince and Nathan Friend back which are big inclusions but lose Preston Campbell and Greg Bird in the exchange (through injury and suspension).
The Cowboys on the other hand played quite well in their loss to Parramatta and actually lost in similar fashion to how the Titans won with a late Luke Burt try and sideline conversion getting Parra across the line.
Matt Bowen and Johnathan Thurston are playing very well behind an improved Cowboys pack and I think they'll be too good on Friday Night in Townsville.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
SMH Late Mail 8/4 - Scott Prince will play despite a hamstring injury that kept him out last week and Nathan Friend (who is set to sign with the Warriors for 2012) will play. Luke O'Dwyer could force his way past Sam Tagataese or Ryan James for a bench spot. The Cowboys will likely play Scott Bolton ahead of Ashton Sims, while Antonio Winterstein could move into Will Tupou's spot.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
COWBOYS To Win By 12 Points.

SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
5:35pm (Local) 9 April @ Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland.
Coming In...
WARRIORS (14th) - RECORD 1-3 for 2 Points, -19.
ROOSTERS (7th) - RECORD 2-2 for 4 Points, +14.
Head to Head Last 10...
WARRIORS 7 ROOSTERS 2 DRAW 1 - The Warriors have won the last five games stretching back to a semi final in 2008 and the Roosters have won just 1 of the last 9 games.
Tuesday Team News...
WAR: Fisiiahi, Tupou, Berrigan, Mannering (c), Inu, Mateo, Maloney, Sam Rapira, Heremaia, Jacob Lillyman, Brown, Ta'ai, Luck. Bench: Locke, Latimore, Matulino, Taylor, Robinson.
[Team Changes - Ivan Cleary has punted Russell Packer to the NSW Cup for reasons that make little sense given the big fella has actually played pretty well in the limited game time Cleary has given him so far this season... but this isn't the first time Cleary has dropped Packer so there may be more to it. Sam Rapira starts and Jeremy Latimore comes onto the bench. Young backrower Matt Robinson is listed as 18th man and may be an outside chance of making his NRL debut. ]
SYD: Minichiello, J Carney, Aubusson, Kenny-Dowall, Leilua, T Carney, Pearce, Waerea-Hargreaves, Friend, Kennedy, Anasta (c), Symonds, Myles. Bench: Ryles, Masoe, Riddell, Nu'uausala, Conn, Arona, Graham.
[Team Changes - Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Tom Symonds hold their starting spots despite the return of Jason Ryles and Frank-Paul Nu'uausala from injury. Phil Graham has also been named on an extended bench after a couple of weeks in the NSW Cup. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Warriors got off the mark with a win over the Sharks in Taupo last Sunday and get to entertain the Roosters this week back at Mt Smart. Ivan Cleary's changes worked a treat (although for some reason he's continued them by dropping Russell Packer - who got 2 Dally M points from Daryl Halligan! - on form) and he's left Lance Hohaia, Joel Moon and Brett Seymour out again.
The Roosters played quite well in their 24-6 victory over the Tigers but the normally greasy conditions in Auckland work against their style of play. That being said they are still a potent combination but it'll be up front where the Roosters must win the game.
The Warriors at home are always tough to beat and I'm leaning in their direction for this one.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
SMH Late Mail 8/4 - Mark Riddell is not playing this weekend (he is staying in Sydney) with Daniel Conn likely to take his spot on the bench. Matt Robinson will likely remain 18th man for the Warriors.
TEAM CHANGE 8/4 - There is a late change on the bench with Kevin Locke replaced by Lance Hohaia for the Warriors.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
WARRIORS To Win By 2 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:35pm (Local) 9 April @ Centrebet Stadium, Penrith.
Coming In...
PANTHERS (16th) - RECORD 1-3 for 2 Points, -60.
RAIDERS (13th) - RECORD 1-3 for 2 Points, +1.
Head to Head Last 10...
PANTHERS 4 RAIDERS 6 - Penrith won in Round 1 last year but Canberra beat them in Round 22 and again in a Qualifying Final in Penrith.
Tuesday Team News...
PEN: M Gordon, Earl, Jennings, Tighe, Simmons, Burns, Walsh, Grant, Kingston, Civoniceva (c), Waterhouse, Plum, Fatiaki. Bench: Weston, Bell, Tahu, Seluini, Iosefa, Purtell.
[Team Changes - With Luke Lewis, Lachlan Coote and Sam McKendry all absent there are reprieves for Sandor Earl and Sarafu Fatiaki, while Dayne Weston joins the bench and Luke Walsh may return from a shoulder injury at halfback. Masada Iosefa and Adrian Purtell are on the back end of an extended bench and will likely miss out. Kevin Kingston goes back to hooker and Michael Gordon moves to fullback. ]
CAN: Ferguson, Robinson, Croker, Thompson, Vidot, McCrone, Orford, Learoyd-Lahrs, Waddell, Shillington (c), Thurling, Harrison (c), Fensom. Bench: Buttriss, Miller, Galea, White, Milne, Stuart.
[Team Changes - Josh Dugan re-injured his calf against the Titans and is out for up to a month. Blake Ferguson goes back to fullback and Reece Robinson comes onto the wing. Matt Orford and Josh McCrone hold their spots in the halves. Tom Learoyd-Lahrs starts for the injured Dane Tilse (Hammy), while Shaun Fensom gets his starting spot back from Josh Miller who moves to the bench. Danny Galea comes in for Tilse in the 17 and David Milne and James Stuart are on standby for Joel Thompson and Daniel Vidot who are in doubt according to coach David Furner. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Panthers are struggling but so are the Raiders - so it's a lottery picking a winner in this one.
Penrith had a crack against the Broncos but lacked any spark in attack and if Luke Walsh returns from injury that will help them... only losing Lachlan Coote and Luke Lewis definitely hurts them.
Canberra grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory to borrow an overused cliche and let a 22-16 lead with no time left on the clock slip and become a 23-22 defeat at home to the Titans. They also lost Josh Dugan and Dane Tilse in the process.
Matt Orford was retained (and rightly so) for this clash because the players and the coach wanted him there - funnily enough that actually matters more than what the media and fans say - and he'll lead the Raiders to a win in Penrith on Saturday.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
SMH Late Mail 8/4 - Joel Thompson is out for the Raiders after his blood loss from last week proved too great a risk to play him this weekend. He'll be back next week. Daniel Vidot will play, with Blake Ferguson going to the centres and David Milne back to fullback. The Panthers will probably leave Masada Iosefa and Adrian Purtell out of the 17, although Purtell is a chance to replace Sarafu Fatiaki who was named at lock.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
RAIDERS To Win By 7 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:35pm (Local) 9 April @ Toyota Stadium, Sydney.
Coming In...
SHARKS (9th) - RECORD 2-2 for 4 Points, +2.
SEA EAGLES (8th) - RECORD 2-2 for 4 Points, +11.
Head to Head Last 10...
SHARKS 3 SEA EAGLES 7 - Manly won both games last year and have no lost to the Sharks since Round 1, 2008 (5 wins in a row).
Tuesday Team News...
CRO: Gardner, M Wright, Pomeroy, Best, Williams, Kelly, Graham, Snowden, Aiton, Douglas, Smith, Tupou, Gallen (c). Bench: Cordoba, B Wright, Flanagan, Collis, Mannah.
[Team Changes - John Morris is out with a knee injury until RD10 and Paul Aiton starts. There is some doubt over the fitness of Jeremy Smith (calf) and Dean Collis and Taulima Tautai have been recalled to an extended bench for the clash with Manly on Saturday Night. ]
MAN: B Stewart, Robertson, Lyon (c), Matai, Hopoate, K Foran, Cherry-Evans, King (c), Ballin, Kite, Buhrer, Galuvao, G Stewart. Bench: Robinson, Harrison, Rose, Mauro, T Williams.
[Team Changes - Brett Stewart, Steve Matai and George Rose are back for the Sea Eagles but a club imposed suspension on Anthony Watmough and Terence Seu Seu for urinating in public leaves them short-handed for another week. Jamie Buhrer starts for Watmough and Will Hopoate shifts to the wing to accommodate Matai's & Stewart's return. Tony Williams also returns from an ankle injury but may not make the final cut unless Brett Stewart's hamstring is not 100%. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Sharks played well in their loss to the Warriors and are looking like a much improved offensive team in 2011. Their second phase play... or should I say the fact they have some second phase play is a big improvement and their defence is solid enough to suggest they can be competitive in 2011.
The Sea Eagles on the other hand will rue a 20 minute period before and after half-time against the Rabbitohs where they let their hold on a game slip and despite a late comeback - it cost them a vital two points in Gosford. Daly Cherry-Evans could have taken the game into Golden Point with a sideline conversion but he wasn't up to the task and Manly's loss was compounded with the micturition exploits of Anthony Watmough and Terence Seu Seu a few days later. Both are suspended for this match by their club for their aim outside of Target in Manly.
Even without Watmough the fact Manly should get Steve Matai and Brett Stewart back makes Manly's attack that little bit too good for the Sharks to counter. Taking the Sea Eagles.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
SMH Late Mail 8/4 - Manly and Cronulla will decide on their 17 man squads on Saturday, with Dean Collis missing out for the Sharks.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
SEA EAGLES To Win By 4 Points.

SUNDAY FOOTBALL
              V
2:05pm (Local) 10 April @ AAMI Park, Melbourne.
Coming In...
STORM (2nd) - RECORD 3-1 for 6 Points, +26.
EELS (12th) - RECORD 2-2 for 4 Points, -20.
Head to Head Last 10...
STORM 6 EELS 4 - Parramatta won their only meeting last year 24-10 in Round 13 at Parramatta and have won 3 of the last four stretching back to 2008.
Tuesday Team News...
MEL: Slater, O'Neill, Nielsen, Champion, Duffie, Widdop, Cronk, Thompson, Smith (c), Norrie, Blair, Proctor, Lowrie. Bench: Hinchcliffe, Vea, Woolnough, Bromwich, Quinn, Lowe.
[Team Changes - Matt Duffie holds his starting wing spot ahead of Anthony Quinn this week with Quinn named on the bench. Troy Thompson gets the start again but his cheekbone injury may rule him out. Kevin Proctor goes to the second row and Jaiman Lowe is named on an extended bench. ]
PAR: Hayne, Burt, Reddy, Smith, Uaisele, Mortimer, Robson, Mannah, McGuire, Shackleton, Hindmarsh (c), Lasalo, Horo. Bench: Mitchell, Allgood, Webb, MoiMoi.
[Team Changes - The return of FuiFui MoiMoi sees Justin Horo move to lock and Ben Smith into the centres for the injured Ryan Morgan. Casey McGuire replaces Matthew Keating at hooker. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Storm were irrepressible at home on Monday night against the league leading Bulldogs and if they turn up like that when Parramatta come to visit on Sunday they might put 50 on the Eels.
That's not to say that the Eels were poor in their win over the Cowboys but their performance wasn't in the same class and neither was their opposition. Nathan Hindmarsh and Jarryd Hayne are once again carrying the Eels and that doesn't appear to be enough to counter the aces in the Melbourne team.
Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk enjoyed themselves on Monday Night and I think they'll enjoy themselves once again on Sunday - take Melbourne.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
TEAM CHANGE 7/4 According to a whisper on the Eels Facebook page - young three-quarter Jacob Loko will debut this weekend in place of Etu Uaisele. Expect ths to be confirmed in the SMH Late Mail on Friday.
SMH Late Mail 8/4 - Surprisingly the SMH did not mention the Loko for Uaisele change but it still remains likely. The Storm may be without Troy Thompson after a nasty cheek injury last week.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
STORM To Win By 10 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
SUNDAY FOOTBALL
              V
3:05pm (Local) 10 April @ Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney.
Coming In...
DRAGONS (3rd) - RECORD 3-1 for 6 Points, +18.
BULLDOGS (4th) - RECORD 3-1 for 6 Points, +9.
Head to Head Last 10...
DRAGONS 4 BULLDOGS 6 - Despite the Bulldogs holding the edge 6-4 in the last 10 games, the Dragons have won 4 straight since Round 20, 2008.
Tuesday Team News...
STI: Boyd, Morris, Gasnier, Cooper, Nightingale, Soward, Hornby (c), Hunt, Fien, Merrin, Scott, Creagh, Prior. Bench: Young, Green, Gower, Stanley, Greenfield, Cuthbertson, Rein.
[Team Changes - Trent Merrin's starting spot is made official with David Gower named back on the bench alongside Dean Young (who was a late starter v Newcastle), Michael Greenfield, Adam Cuthbertson and Mitch Rein. Ben Creagh's neck is a concern but he has been named. ]
CBY: Barba, Turner, Lafai, Idris, Goodwin, Keating, Hodkinson, Tolman, Ennis, Paea, Pritchard, Ryan (c), Stagg. Bench: Kasiano, Foster, Payne, Halatau, Armit.
[Team Changes - There is just one change for the Bulldogs with Mickey Paea back into the starting team after missing the Melbourne clash with a knee injury. But the Bulldogs only arrived back in Sydney on Tuesday afternoon so any changes will likely happen later in the week. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
When Wayne Bennett declares that the Dragons win over the Knights in Newcastle was their best of the season - you take notice as to why. The Dragons lead 14-6 at halftime and then 20-6 early in the second half and although they didn't go on with the job they did hold out a strong Newcastle comeback with their defence to win 20-18. Once again their defence was the feature of their win and the supercoach was very impressed.
The Bulldogs were poor on Monday Night in comparison with their opposition. Where Melbourne looked every bit a premiership contender the Bulldogs did not and what may be concerning to Canterbury coach Kevin Moore is that the Bulldogs didn't play a great deal differently to their opening three weeks when they won all three games. The fact is the Storm showed them that to truly be a force in this competition - solid play certainly isn't good enough.
On that basis I think the Dragons are good things to send the Bulldogs to a second straight defeat at the hands of a quality team at the SCG on Sunday.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
SMH Late Mail 8/4 - Chris Armit remains on standby for Mickey Paea who missed the Storm clash with a knee injury. The Dragons will leave Adam Cuthbertson and Mitch Rein out while David Gower or Michael Greenfield will get the final spot.
The DT reports that Brett Morris has a calf injury but will play. While Frank Pritchard (Knee) and Bryson Goodwin (Ankle) are carrying injury but will play.
The NRL Tweet's Tip...
DRAGONS To Win By 13 Points.
|-| |-| |-|
MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
              V
7:05pm (Local) 11 April @ Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane.
Coming In...
BRONCOS (1st) - RECORD 3-1 for 6 Points, +28.
KNIGHTS (5th) - RECORD 2-2 for 4 Points, +30.
Head to Head Last 10...
BRONCOS 6 KNIGHTS 4 - Newcastle won both games last year and are riding a 3 game winning streak from 2009. The Broncos won 5 straight from 2006-2008.
Tuesday Team News...
BRI: Beale, Copley, Reed, Hodges, Yow Yeh, Lockyer (c), Wallace, Thaiday, McCullough, Hannant, Glenn, Gillett, Parker. Bench: Dodds, Te'o, McGuire, Tronc, Carlaw, Kenny, Norman.
[Team Changes - There is no Ben Hunt on the bench for the Broncos due to a knee injury and they have named a thousand forwards instead. Mitchell Dodds, Nick Kenny and Dane Carlaw are on an extended bench along with utility Corey Norman. Dale Copley holds his spot on the wing and there is still no Josh Hoffman due to injury. ]
NEW: W Naiqama, McManus, Sa'u, MacDougall, Uate, Gidley (c), Mullen, Kaufusi, Hilder, Tuimavave, Taia, Houston, Edwards. Bench: Karawana, Paterson, Fa'aoso, Tolar.
[Team Changes - No changes for the Knights with the same 17 that lost to the Dragons named for Monday Night. ]
Wednesday Game Preview...
The Broncos are winning games based on their defence and sit on top of the ladder with a 3-1 record and things are looking good for new coach Anthony Griffin. But looks can be deceiving - the Broncos may have defended well but the Raiders, Titans and Panthers haven't thrown a great deal of creativity at them in the last three weeks and the Knights have shown plenty of spark in attack so far this season.
Newcastle have dropped their last two but they haven't looked also-rans in either defeat to Manly or St.George-Illawarra. They also have Kurt Gidley back and an eight day break from their last match before this game and that will work to their advantage. The Broncos on the other hand are having to wait an eternity to play their games this season with their first four games on Friday Nights and then this one on a Monday.
The Knights will win this in a boilover at Suncorp on the strength of their attacking flair.
Tipping + Fantasy Late Mail...
SMH Late Mail 8/4 - Zeb Taia is the big loss for the Knights after being ruled out with a bulging disc in his neck and Mark Taufua or Steven Southern or even Isaac De Gois may be a late replacement. Sam Thaiday will play for the Broncos but he remains troubled by a groin injury.
The DT reports that Dale Copley has 'general soreness' but will play. They also said Zeb Taia will play but as we pointed out above - he will not.
