ROUND SEVENTEEN OF THE NRL PREMIERSHIP SEASON 2010
BYES - - BYES
|=| FRIDAY
BRONCOSVTIGERS
|=| Brisbane Broncos 18pts: 8-7, 344-315, +29 = 6th.
|=| Wests Tigers 20pts: 8-6, 299-294, +5 = 3rd.
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From Suncorp: See Results Article on Monday.
|=| Wednesday's Market: BRI $2.45 v WTG $1.55 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Wednesday's Preview: Make no mistake - the Wests Tigers could have won their game with the Dragons last Friday Night had Benji Marshall played even moderately well... the final 32-10 score line didn't represent the difference between the two teams and Marshall was very poor. It looked like he was going through the motions at halfback - having been asked to play there by coach Tim Sheens following Robert Lui's knee injury mid-week. Had Marshall embraced the opportunity to be a difference maker at halfback... the Dragons would not have had it all their own way. So having said that - the Tigers should be a better team if Marshall accepts that at halfback he can make just as big a difference as he does normally at five-eighth. With the Broncos missing their 3 best players through Origin duty and the Tigers have zero representation - the Wests Tigers will go to Suncorp and win.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News 30/6 (Friday's Update with help from SMH's Late Mail):
Rep Players Out: Darren Lockyer, Sam Thaiday & Israel Folau will represent Queensland, while the Tigers have zero rep players yet again. Brisbane also have lost Lagi Setu to a knee injury. Brisbane promote Scott Anderson, Josh McGuire, Corey Norman & Gerard Beale for this game. The Tigers named Daniel Fitzhenry at halfback but have reshuffled already with Benji Marshall to halfback, Fitzhenry to the wing, Geoff Daniela to the centres and Chris Lawrence at five-eighth. Beau Ryan, Junior Moors & Mark Flanagan are out for the Tigers, in come Liam Fulton, Nathan Waters, Mitch Brown & Andrew Fifita. 2/7 Update: Lawrence is confirmed at five-eighth with the shuffle as listed above. Mitch Brown or Nathan Waters will drop off the bench. Brisbane have replaced Setu with the combination listed above and expect no other changes.
|=| NRL Tweet's Prediction: TIGERS by 12 =  ?
 |=| |=| |=|
|=| FRIDAY
SHARKSVBULLDOGS
|=| Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks 14pts: 5-9, 205-333, -128 = 13th.
|=| Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 12pts: 4-10, 262-293, -31 = 14th.
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From Bluetongue: See Results Article on Monday.
|=| Wednesday's Market: CRO $3.05 v CBY $1.38 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Wednesday's Preview: The Sharks came back from 18-0 down to the Cowboys in Townsville and won in Golden Point 20-19 last week - and if they didn't lose their three of their best players to rep duty this round... you'd almost find yourself picking the Sharks with confidence! But with Paul Gallen, Trent Barrett & Kade Snowden playing for the Blues - you find yourself reconsidering. It's not like their opponents Canterbury set the world on fire by beating Canberra 18-10 (it was the Bulldogs first win since Round 7) but they are relatively healthy and only lose Michael Ennis to Origin. What the Sharks have going for them is a creative halves combo of Tim Smith and the recalled Scott Porter, a decent forward pack and Nathan Gardner at fullback... the downside is Canterbury played great footy for 20 minutes before shutting it down against Canberra. If Kevin Moore lets his boys play for the full 80 minutes here - it could get ugly and all signs point to a Bulldogs win in Gosford.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News 30/6 (Friday's Update with help from SMH's Late Mail): Rep Players Out: Cronulla have Trent Barrett, Kade Snowden & Paul Gallen in Origin, while the Bulldogs only lose Michael Ennis. Canterbury have continued with the Jamal Idris in the second row experiment after a so-so debut on Monday. This allows Shane Neumann to hold his spot at centre. Joel Romelo will come in at hooker for Ennis. The Sharks promote Scott Porter to five-eighth after Cronulla's stand out player of 2009 was dropped to NSW Cup early in the season. Luke Douglas is skipper while Luke Harlen comes in for Adam Cuthbertson. 2/7 Update: Both Canterbury & Cronulla are sweet for Saturday Night - 1 through 17. Late change for Bulldogs - Joel Romelo out and Blake Green to start at hooker. No word yet on who will come onto the bench.
 |=| NRL Tweet's Prediction: BULLDOGS by 8 =  ?
 |=| |=| |=|
|=| SUNDAY
RAIDERSVROOSTERS
|=| Canberra Raiders 14pts: 5-8, 213-288, -75 = 12th.
|=| Sydney Roosters 18pts: 7-7, 315-328, -13 = 8th.
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From Canberra: See Results Article on Monday.
|=| Wednesday's Market: CAN $1.60 v SYD $2.35 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Wednesday's Preview: Must win for the Canberra Raiders... they've blown three straight games against the Cowboys, Tigers & Bulldogs - when in a position to win. The Roosters blew a game of their own in Christchurch - leading 18-8 with 6 minutes left before letting the Warriors win on the last play of the game. The Roosters have lost leading players Mitchell Pearce and Nate Myles - but get Braith Anasta back, while the Raiders are without big men David Shillington & Tom Learoyd-Lahrs. If this was at the SFS - the Roosters would be an easy choice... but the Raiders are their own worst enemy at the moment so you have to figure that at home - Canberra overcome themselves and win a tight one.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News 30/6 (Friday's Update with help from
SMH's Late Mail): Rep Players Out: David Shillington & Tom Learoyd-Lahrs for Canberra, Mitchell Pearce & Nate Myles for Roosters. Canberra have made two forced changes with Joe Picker & Troy Thompson starting for Shillington & Learoyd-Lahrs, the Raiders have also brought Travis Waddell, Danny Galea & Sam Mataora onto the bench. The Roosters get Braith Anasta back from a hamstring injury, while Joseph Leilua starts and Tom Symonds, Daniel Conn & Lopini Paea join the bench. Canberra have selected Josh Dugan - despite his run in with the law over driving whilst suspended the day before the Bulldogs game. 2/7 Update: Canberra expect Josh Dugan to play after he got through his comeback last week against Canterbury. Two of Josh McCrone, Travis Waddell & Sam Mataora are expected to drop off the Raiders bench. The Roosters will likely shave two of Martin Kennedy, Daniel Conn & Lopini Paea from their bench.
 |=| NRL Tweet's Prediction: RAIDERS by 2 =  ?
 |=| |=| |=|
|=| SUNDAY
WARRIORSVEELS
|=| Warriors 18pts: 7-7, 294-347, -53 = 9th.
|=| Parramatta Eels 16pts: 6-8, 205-222, -17 = 10th.
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From Mt Smart: See Results Article on Monday.
|=| Wednesday's Market: WAR $1.60 v PAR $2.35 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Wednesday's Preview: The Warriors stole a game on the bell to beat the Sydney Roosters 20-18 in Christchurch and are winners of 4 of their past 6 - so they are in form. Parramatta have dropped two straight low scoring games which suggests that their defence is in order but their attack certainly isn't. They got beat on the bell by Newcastle 6-4 and lost an arm-wrestle to the Broncos 10-6. With Jarryd Hayne & Tim Mannah on Origin duty and a host of quality players injured or suspended... it is hard to believe the Eels can turn it around in Auckland against a Warriors team that is only missing Kevin Locke from last week. News this week that Steven Price will not play again is sad but his team-mates should still win this game without him and accordingly you pick the Warriors at home.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News 30/6 (Friday's Update with help from
SMH's Late Mail): Rep Players Out: Jarryd Hayne & Tim Mannah for Parramatta, Warriors have no representatives. Parramatta also lose Justin Poore & Ben Smith to injury. Promoted are rookies Pele Peletelese, Mitchell Allgood & Pat O'Hanlon, with new signing Manase Manuokafoa and Brendan Oake also picked. Tom Humble goes to fullback, Jeff Robson to five-eighth and another new selection Matt Keating to hooker. The Warriors lost Kevin Locke who injured himself scoring the match winner against the Roosters and have Bill Tupou coming onto the wing. Sione Lousi or Ukuma Ta'ai will drop off the bench. 2/7 Update: Again little change expected. Two of the rookies Pat O'Hanlon, Pele Peletelese & Mitchell Allgood are expected to be left off the bench in favour of Manase Manuokafoa. The Warriors still have to decide between Sione Lousi & Ukuma Ta'ai.

|=| MONDAY
DRAGONSVPANTHERS
|=| St.George-Illawarra Dragons 26pts: 12-3, 347-157, +190 = 1st.
|=| Penrith Panthers 24pts: 10-4, 393-280, +113 = 2nd.
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From WIN Jubilee: See Results Article on Monday.
|=| Wednesday's Market: STI $1.40 v PEN $2.95 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Wednesday's Preview: What a great game this could have been if the NRL didn't have a schedule that sucked royally. We need to have State of Origin on a Wednesday Night but I can't help but think we shouldn't have any NRL Games on the weekend before Origin because so many great players are missing from clubs. What's the alternative? Simply put - showcase the Toyota Cup 3 Weekends a year before Origin... after all we keep hearing how great a product it is... As for the Dragons v Panthers - so many key players out - esp for Penrith and the Dragons retain their 6-7-9 which is about all you need to know when Penrith also lost their halfback Luke Walsh on top of their most influential player Luke Lewis. No question the Panthers will have a dig but their attacking weapons aren't available and that's why the Dragons will win this match. Oh and some cat called Gasnier is on a 6 man bench for the Dragons...
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News 30/6 (Friday's Update with help from SMH's Late Mail): Rep Players Out: Brett Morris, Beau Scott, Darius Boyd, Neville Costigan for Dragons, Michael Jennings, Luke Lewis, Michael Gordon, Petero Civoniceva for the Panthers. Walsh is out for Penrith with a hamstring injury. Travis Burns is back for Penrith, as are Nathan Smith, Frank Puletua, Joseph Paulo, Sandor Earl & David Simmons. St.George-Illawarra promote Kalifa Fai-Fai Loa, Michael Lett, Michael Greenfield, Jon Green, Jake Marketo & Ricky Thorby... and some cat called Mark Gasnier is also on the bench. 2/7 Update: Mark Gasnier is expected to start with Matt Prior pushing into the front row for Ricky Thorby. Trent Merrin is also likely to start at prop ahead of Jon Green. Jake Marketo & Michael Greenfield are expected to drop off the bench. Penrith won't get Luke Walsh back even though his hamstring injury is expected to keep him out just this week - the Monday game suggested he might be able to play. Coach Matt Elliott is unlikely to risk him, with the Panthers deciding between Joseph Paulo & Frank Puletua for their final bench spot.

|=| WEDNESDAY
NSW BLUESVQLD MAROONS
|=| New South Wales Blues: 2 Games, 2 Losses, 30 Points For, 62 Points Against.
|=| Queensland Maroons: 2 Games, 2 Wins, 62 Points For, 30 Points Against.
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From ANZ: See Game 3 Page.
|=| Wednesday's Market: NSW $2.60 v QLD $1.50 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Wednesday's Preview: The Blues are trying to avoid being swept by Queensland for the first time since 1995... Queensland for all their dominance in the last five years - have yet to close out a series 3-0. Motivation remains for both teams despite the 'dead rubber' but as strong as the Maroons desire is to win 3-0 - the Blues have been comprehensively outplayed in both games when it mattered and must be dying to get a token victory at home in Game 3. Maroons have to be favourites and truth be told are actually longer odds than I expected at $1.50.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News 29/6 (any further updates will be with help from SMH's Late Mail): Eight changes for NSW for Game 3. In come Kade Snowden, Tim Mannah, Jason King, Michael Jennings, Michael Gordon, Anthony Watmough, Greg Bird & Luke Lewis.... out go Nathan Hindmarsh, Matt Cooper, Joel Monaghan, Ben Creagh, Trent Waterhouse, Brett White, Michael Weyman & Luke O'Donnell. Queensland have made just the one change - Petero Civoniceva in for Ben Hannant with Ben Lowe the new 18th man.
