ROUND THIRTEEN OF THE NRL PREMIERSHIP SEASON 2010
FRIDAY
VBulldogs v Tigers

 Market Watch:  CBY $2.17 v WTG $1.70
Tuesday's Preview:  I'm picking Canterbury. Let that sink in for five minutes - read the rest of the Tips for Round 13 and come back for the reasons. Because it's going to take that long for me to think up reasons why the Bulldogs will beat the Tigers. It's a theory... based on two factors. One, the Bulldogs are at home and Two, the Bulldogs have lost 4 straight. Last week against Melbourne the Bulldogs took their understrength opposition too lightly and then didn't have the poise to finish off their chances in the second half. The Tigers on the other hand played some incredibly entertaining football en route to a 50-6 thrashing of the Warriors at Campbelltown. But I've often thought the Bulldogs pack had an edge on the Tigers. With Ben Hannant, Michael Hodgson & Chris Armit in their front row - the Bulldogs will win the go-forward battle which will limit Benji Marshall's space and unless Kevin Moore was watching a different game to me last week - getting the ball to Josh Morris & Bryson Goodwin will pay huge dividends against Geoff Daniela & Beau Ryan. I've got Canterbury in a close one.
Selection & Fantasy News 1/6 (with help from SMH's Late Mail):  Even though I've picked Canterbury the lack of Ben Barba on the bench is unforgivable. Canterbury needed a spark v Melbourne and although Joel Romelo was good - Barba could have turned the half chances into points. He might be a late call up and when you consider Moore won't use Tim Browne much anyway - Barba must play. The Wests Tigers are going in with the same 17 that crushed the Warriors - but new recruit Wade McKinnon will have a fitness test late in the week to see whether he has overcome a hamstring strain. If he's fit - he'll force Mitch Brown off the bench. Update 4/6: Daniel Fitzhenry is out with a hamstring strain - Mitch Brown will start on the wing and Beau Ryan will definitely play fullback. McKinnon is highly unlikely to play. Utility back Sean Meaney has been added to the Tigers bench. The Bulldogs could still change their bench but with Sydney's big wet they may choose to go in with another prop like Mickey Paea.
 NRL Tweet's Prediction: Bulldogs by 4 =  ?

FRIDAY
VEels v Storm
Post Game Tweets + Rd 13 Notes from ANZ in the Results Article
 Market Watch:  PAR $2.15 v MEL $1.70
Tuesday's Preview:  Parramatta tried hard in the first half v St.George-Illawarra but had no answers for the Dragons in the second half. With Melbourne appearing to have Greg Inglis, Billy Slater & Cameron Smith back from injury in this game - they may not have any answers for the Storm either. Nathan Hindmarsh has been named to play but his sternum injury is such that one knock at training or in the warm up and he's cactus. Jarryd Hayne was good against the Dragons but he needs to be superhuman this Friday Night for the Eels to keep it close - especially when you consider how much the Eels have regressed in form since their win over Manly in Round 11. Cooper Cronk was brilliant v Canterbury and is just the kind of player the Eels need to run their team - but he's still a member of the Storm and his presence is good enough for me to tip Melbourne by a few. By the way - for a Grand Final Rematch this game has lost a lot of luster with the Storm's Salary Cap Rort & Parramatta's up and down form in 2010.
Selection & Fantasy News 1/6 (with help from SMH's Late Mail):  As mentioned above the Storm get Inglis, Slater & Smith back - while the Eels might get Hindmarsh, Eric Grothe & Joel Reddy back from injury. The Storm bench looks especially strong with Aiden Tolman, Sika Manu, Ryan Hinchcliffe & Jeff Lima featuring (expect Kevin Proctor to drop off). The Storm did however lose Chase Stanley to a knee injury in his comeback game but Greg Inglis is a fair replacement. Update 4/6: Eric Grothe is out with a knee injury - Krisnan Inu is his replacement on the wing. Nathan Hindmarsh should play but he'll have to wait til the warm up before we know for sure. Jeff Lima will probably push Kevin Proctor off the bench given the wet conditions in Sydney.
 NRL Tweet's Prediction: Storm by 10 =  ?

SATURDAY
VPanthers v Knights
Post Game Tweets + Rd 13 Notes from ANZ in the Results Article
Follow The NRL Tweet for more.
 Market Watch:  PEN $1.50 v NEW $2.60
Tuesday's Preview:  Penrith were very disappointing against South Sydney - with their forward pack being totally outplayed at ANZ Stadium. Petero Civoniceva won't be back for a few weeks and Frank Pritchard is out again with a shoulder injury - so the Panthers are a little thin up front v Newcastle. The Knights have shown their hand at the selection table installing NSW Origin Fullback Kurt Gidley at halfback, getting Isaac De Gois, James McManus, Jarrod Mullen & Adam MacDougall back from injury and keeping Wes Naiqama at fullback. Although the Knights lack some depth in the front row - their backrow looks dangerous with Zeb Taia locking Steven Simpson & Cory Paterson. Penrith have the home ground advantage and will be keen to make up for their poor showing last week - the Knights have the strikepower to win this game but as much as I'd like to tip the upset - I can't and am going with the Penny Panthers at CUA.
Selection & Fantasy News 1/6 (with help from SMH's Late Mail):  With Pritchard out - Gavin Cooper is a more than capable replacement in the backrow. Matthew Bell keeps his starting spot for Civoniceva while Wade Graham & Frank Puletua join an extended bench. The Knights had the bye last week but new faces include De Gois, MacDougall, McManus, Mullen, Con Mika & rookie Joel Edwards - making way are Keith Lulia, Cooper Vuna, Scott Dureau, George Ndaira, Mark Taufua & Ben Rogers (who is suspended). Update 4/6: Steven Simpson could be a late withdrawal with knee soreness. Shannon McDonnell could make a return from his own knee injury - that would push Wes Naiqama to the bench and Matt Hilder may start for Simpson. The Panthers will have to trim their extended bench by kick-off.
 NRL Tweet's Prediction: Panthers by 6  ?

SATURDAY
VRoosters v Sharks
Post Game Tweets + Rd 13 Notes from ANZ in the Results Article
 Market Watch:  SYD $1.36 v CRO $3.15
Tuesday's Preview:  The Sydney Roosters simply wanted their game with the Titans more and thoroughly deserved their 30-16 win at Skilled. Cronulla on the other hand simply didn't have the class to beat the Broncos when the game was there for the taking. Trent Barrett ran harder than he has all season but he's lost the class he once had and Tim Smith was horrendous in key attacking situations. What the Roosters have going for them is their attacking trifecta of Mitchell Pearce, Braith Anasta & Todd Carney and the Sharks simply can't compete with that. Up front however the Sharks can more than match the Roosters - but you would've said the same about the Titans last week and the Roosters pack out enthused them considerably. This is at the SFS in front of probably only 5,000 people... but the Roosters still deserve to be picked to win.
Selection & Fantasy News 1/6 (with help from SMH's Late Mail):  The Roosters have only added James Aubusson to their bench from the Gold Coast game. Cronulla have made zero changes for a few weeks in a row now... Ricky Stuart is either keeping the faith or has given up tinkering with a side that he won't be coaching in 2010. Updated 4/6: No injury concerns for either team although Tom Symonds could be a late inclusion on the Roosters bench as he continues his return from injury.
 NRL Tweet's Prediction: Roosters by 8  ?

SUNDAY
VWarriors v Dragons
Post Game Tweets + Rd 13 Notes from ANZ in the Results Article
Follow The NRL Tweet for more.
 Market Watch:  WAR $2.95 v STI $1.40
Tuesday's Preview:  St.George-Illawarra travel to Mt Smart with the wind in their sails after crushing the Eels 30-0 last Friday Night. The Warriors were themselves crushed 50-6 by the Wests Tigers on the same night - so all signs point to a big Dragons win. Although the Warriors get Manu Vatuvei, James Maloney & Micheal Luck back from injury, they have lost key playmaker Brett Seymour to a knee injury and that's huge. It's hard to see the Warriors pack (minus Steven Price & Sam Rapira) stemming the St.George-Illawarra go-forward and defensively the Dragons look to have the Warriors covered. Even at Mt Smart the Dragons deserve heavy favouritism.
Selection & Fantasy News 1/6 (with help from SMH's Late Mail):  The Warriors get Vatuvei, Maloney & Luck back from injury which is a bonus. Rookie five-eighth Isaac John replaces the dropped Joel Moon, while Maloney moves back to halfback to cover the loss of Seymour. Bill Tupou makes way for Vatuvei while Sione Lousi will likely drop off the bench for the inclusion of Luck. St.George-Illawarra have named Matt Cooper who returns from a hip injury suffered in Origin 1 but Kyle Stanley has retained a spot on the bench as cover for Cooper. Updated 4/6: Matt Cooper should play but Kyle Stanley might stay on the bench anyway with Michael Greenfield the man most likely to drop off if Stanley gets the call. The Warriors will likely shave Sione Lousi from their 5 man bench.
 NRL Tweet's Prediction: Dragons by 12 =  ?

SUNDAY
VRaiders v Titans
Post Game Tweets + Rd 13 Notes from ANZ in the Results Article | Follow The NRL Tweet for more.
 Market Watch:  CAN $1.60 v GLD $2.35
Tuesday's Preview:  As good as Canberra were against St.George-Illawarra in Round 12 - they are awfully short at home v the Titans. Canberra have their two State of Origin players back in David Shillington & Tom Learoyd-Lahrs but the big advantage the team may have is Coach David Furner loosening up the game plan. Canberra were dynamic against the Dragons and didn't go into a defensive shell - as a result they walked away from WIN Stadium with yet another win over the Dragons. The Titans will be smarting from giving up a tonne of possession against the Roosters and Coach John Cartwright would not have let that fact slip in the change rooms after the game. The Titans have some game-breakers in Scott Prince, Greg Bird & Preston Campbell but if the Raiders have truly turned a corner with their game plan - Canberra are my pick at home.
Selection & Fantasy News 1/6 (with help from SMH's Late Mail):  Canberra have named an extended bench of Travis Waddell, Joe Picker, Troy Thompson, Scott Logan, Adam Mogg & Josh Miller as the troops get healthy. Still no Alan Tongue who is out long term but rookie lock Shaun Fensom could be a late inclusion despite not being named. The Titans have added Bodene Thompson & Will Matthews to their bench but have retained the 16 of the 17 man squad that were ordinary against the Roosters - Joseph Tomane comes in for Josh Graham. Update 4/6: Travis Waddell and Troy Thompson will probably miss through injury and Josh Miller and Adam Mogg will replace them on the bench. The Titans will make their final cuts on the bench on Sunday.
 NRL Tweet's Prediction: Raiders by 2 =  ?

SUNDAY
VSea Eagles v Broncos
Post Game Tweets + Rd 13 Notes from ANZ in the Results Article
 Market Watch:  MAN $1.50 v BRI $2.60
Tuesday's Preview:  Manly gutsed out the second half against the Cowboys - but probably still should have lost as North Queensland butchered try after try with the game there to be won. That being said the Sea Eagles still got the 2 points but Brisbane may not be as generous as the Cowboys. Captain Jamie Lyon is out for a month with ankle ligament damage and his absence is a big loss - although Kieran Foran returns he has been listed at centre which may limit his effectiveness. Darren Lockyer, Sam Thaiday & AFL recruit Israel Folau are all in great form and the Brisbane forward pack has been outstanding of late with the addition of Shane Tronc, the return from injury of Corey Parker and the rapid improvement of Ben Te'o. Even though this game is at Brookvale and Manly have won the past four games between the two teams - I'm taking the Broncos in an upset.
Selection & Fantasy News 1/6 (with help from SMH's Late Mail):  Manly may have got Kieran Foran back from a hamstring strain but have lost Jamie Lyon to ankle ligament damage for a month. Josh Perry has also been named after missing the Cowboys with a concussion. Dean Whare keeps his spot while George Rose, Terence Seu Seu & Matt Cross are fighting for two bench spots. Brisbane have selected Israel Folau despite his AFL switch and have kept the same unit that beat the Sharks. Prop Nick Kenny was not named this week after failing a number of fitness tests in recent weeks on a calf injury. Update 4/6: Both teams look fine heading into Sunday's game.
 NRL Tweet's Prediction: Broncos by 4 =  ?
<><><><>
MONDAY
VRabbitohs v Cowboys
Post Game Tweets + Rd 13 Notes from ANZ in the Results Article
 Market Watch:  SOU $1.44 v NQL $2.85
Tuesday's Preview:  North Queensland skipper Johnathan Thurston will try and beat a one match suspension for going off his 'nana last week at referee Jason Robinson but it's hard to see him playing this week against the Rabbitohs (he got off!). South Sydney were up and down in their 42-22 win over the Panthers but the signs are there that they can beat any team on their day. John Sutton was best on field but he's capable of being the best by a country mile if he wants to be. North Queensland should have beaten Manly at home but have no one to blame but themselves and with their apparent lack of interest in putting in during the opening stages of a match - South Sydney by a dozen at home.
Selection & Fantasy News 1/6 (with help from SMH's Late Mail):  South Sydney have stuck with the same 17 that beat the Panthers - Michael Crocker is still suffering from a hamstring strain (as is Shannon McPherson). While Ben Ross had another setback in his quest to play again - his neck remains unfit for the rigors of the NRL. The Cowboys won't have Thurston, while Scott Bolton has to be in some doubt after failing to finish the game v Manly. Dane Hogan has joined an extended bench as cover for Bolton. Update 3/6: Johnathan Thurston was incredibly cleared at the NRL Jokediciary and will play. Update 4/6: With Thurston playing - the Cowboys get a massive boost and at this stage Scott Bolton looks probable. The Rabbitohs are likely to remain 1-17.
 NRL Tweet's Prediction: Rabbitohs by 12 =  ?
