|=| Rabbitohs pull off incredible victory while Referee Jared Maxwell watches on without a whistle.

Round 23 of the Premiership produced two stunning upsets as teams outside the Top 8 woke up to the fact that if they didn't win now - their season was over.

Ricky Ponting has a Big Kahuna...
where is yours Jared?
South Sydney came from 30-12 to defeat the Wests Tigers 34-30 in Golden Point Extra Time (when Maxwell forgot that refereeing a game means doing it for the full 80 minutes and then if there's extra time - another 10 minutes on top of that) and Canberra reversed a 26-12 halftime deficit and won 30-26 over Penrith.

Now I'm not saying that South Sydney didn't deserve to win the game given how they played in the back end of the match but Jared Maxwell simply cannot be taken seriously as a referee when he claimed to Robbie Farah that he 'didn't see' the final play of regulation when Farah clearly was impeded by an off-side Souths player within distance of a penalty goal that could have decided the game after the siren. Not sure where else he was looking given it was literally the last play of regulation but Robbie Farah was well within in his rights to say on radio the next day that Maxwell 'didn't have the kahuna's to make the call'.

The win keeps South Sydney within 2 points of the Top 8 but hey have a very tough run home, while Canberra kept pace with Newcastle (who beat Canterbury) and drew level with Parramatta on 22 points - 4 points behind the Warriors who are in 8th spot.

NOT THE FOOTY SHOW VIDEO PREVIEW ROUND 23

Here are a couple of screen shots from Round 22 that I found interesting:

1. Brookvale Oval on Saturday Night when the Melbourne Storm came to visit...
Don't you just love a Manly Crowd...
that Cameron Smith one must've taken weeks to work out.

2. Next up we have a Frame by Frame screen shot of the second Mark Minichiello Try...
Frame by Frame look at the leadup to Minichiello putting his hand on the ball...
can you make a case that Reddy might have got a touch in Frame 1 or 2?
As we enter Round 23 of the 2010 Premiership - Canterbury is now officially out of Top 8 contention - leaving us with 12 teams fighting it out for 8 playoff spots.

|=| NRL ROUND 23 PREVIEW |=| August 13-16, 2010 |=|
ROUND TWENTY-THREE OF THE NRL PREMIERSHIP SEASON 2010
|=| FRIDAY
BRONCOS v EELS
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From Suncorp:
|=| 7th BRISBANE BRONCOS: 11-9, 456-407, +49, 26pts.
|=| 12th PARRAMATTA EELS: 9-11, 337-407, -70, 22pts.
|=| Wednesday's Market: BRI $1.80 v PAR $2.00 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Recent Clashes: Brisbane have won 3 of the last 4 games against the Eels since 2008. Broncos won 10-6 at Parramatta Stadium in Round 16.
|=| Wednesday's Preview: Parramatta to beat the Broncos on Friday Night. Yes I just wrote that. And you might point to the 34-12 score line last weekend overshadows the fact the Eels led 12-0 over the Titans at halftime. Brisbane did the job against the Cowboys but have probably lost Darren Lockyer to a rib injury for the next couple of weeks. Brisbane without Lockyer is crucial... they are still a good football side without him but are they good enough to beat a Parramatta team with Jarryd Hayne still in form despite the Eels two straight defeats? No - and I'm picking Parramatta at Suncorp.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News August 12 (Friday's Update with help from SMH's Late Mail): Brisbane lost Nick Kenny and Darren Lockyer to injury from last week's win over North Queensland. Lockyer is a chance of playing with a protective guard on his ribs but he is unlikely. Ben Te'o moves to prop and Matt Gillett is back in the second row. Corey Norman replaces Lockyer at five-eighth. Parramatta's Ben Smith was suspended for 2 weeks for a late hit on Scott Prince and will miss this game. Parramatta will take hooker Anthony Mitchell with them to Brisbane - word today is Daniel Mortimer will be replaced by Kris Keating.
Update August 13: Daniel Mortimer will not play - he is being 'rested'. Kris Keating comes into the halves and Anthony Mitchell & Taniela Lasalo join the bench. Brisbane will not have Darren Lockyer and bench prop Scott Anderson has a head gash that will require strapping for him to play.

|=| FRIDAY
SHARKS v ROOSTERS
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From Toyota:
|=| 15th CRONULLA-SUTHERLAND SHARKS: 5-15, 290-507, -217, 14pts.
|=| 3rd SYDNEY ROOSTERS: 12-8, 485-447, +38, 28pts.
|=| Wednesday's Market: CRO $3.25 v SYD $1.34 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Recent Clashes: Sydney Roosters have won 7 of the last 10 games against the Sharks but in Round 13 the Sharks smashed the Roosters 42-18 at the SFS.
|=| Wednesday's Preview: The Roosters had their winning streak snapped by the Dragons last Sunday at the SCG but they should start a new one this Friday Night at Toyota Stadium against the Sharks. Cronulla have zero attacking potency outside of fullback Nathan Gardner and the Roosters should have plenty to prove after poor ball control cost them against the Dragons. Todd Carney still played very well in defeat but look for Mitchell Pearce to have a huge game as the Roosters roll past the woeful Sharks.
Full Preview in the NOT The Footy Show Podcast out Thursday August 12 on iTunes.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News August 12 (Friday's Update with help from SMH's Late Mail): Tim Smith is recalled at halfback for Scott Porter... incredibly the ONLY change for the Sharks after being beaten 37-10 at home by the Warriors. Cronulla fans must be wondering how badly their team has to lose for changes to come... especially in the backline which is producing next to nothing at all. The Roosters get Mitchell Aubusson back from a shoulder injury and he moves into the centres for the injured Kane Linnett. Nate Myles swaps to the backrow for Daniel Conn, while Lopini Paea & Martin Kennedy come onto the bench for Joseph Leilua & Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.
Update August 13: Mitchell Aubusson is out with a shoulder injury - Joseph Leilua is a chance of replacing him but Luke Towers may get the call from the NSW Cup. Tim Smith will play.

|=| SATURDAY
TITANS v COWBOYS
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From Skilled:
|=| 4th GOLD COAST TITANS: 12-8, 423-418, +5, 28pts.
|=| 14th NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS: 5-15, 375-542, -167, 14pts.
|=| Wednesday's Market: GLD $1.20 v NQL $4.50 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Recent Clashes: North Queensland have won the past 2 clashes with the Titans & the teams have split the 6 games in total. Cowboys won 32-18 in Round 4 at Dairy Farmers.
|=| Wednesday's Preview: This is a game the Gold Coast cannot afford to drop if they want to have a Home Final and realistically - how do they lose it? The Cowboys have 5 wins in 20 games and Johnathan Thurston is out for the rest of the season - so how do the Cowboys win it? Well I wouldn't rule the Cowboys out - they showed some ticker in the 2nd half against Brisbane and only lost by 8 points in the end so they might push the Titans here. But you just have to pick the Gold Coast especially at Skilled Park.
Full Preview in the NOT The Footy Show Podcast out Thursday August 12 on iTunes.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News August 12 (Friday's Update with help from SMH's Late Mail): Greg Bird is the big inclusion for the Titans - but he'll play off the bench and probably in the backrow which keeps Mat Rogers - the Titans best play the past month - at five-eighth. Ben Ridge seems the player most likely to be omitted from the bench come kick-off. The Cowboys lost Johnathan Thurston to a season ending injury against Brisbane and Grant Rovelli will take the reigns at halfback. Ben Harris & Isaak Ah Mau will fight it out for a spot on the bench for the suspended James Tamou.
Update August 13: Greg Bird will not return after hamstring soreness plagued each training session during the week. Preston Campbell has a virus and is in doubt. Aaron Cannings will come in for Michael Henderson (virus) while Luke O'Dwyer could come into the squad if Campbell is ruled out. North Queensland will probably cut Isaak Ah Mau from their bench.

BULLDOGS v RAIDERS
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From ANZ:
|=| 13th CANTERBURY-BANKSTOWN BULLDOGS: 7-13, 410-443, -33, 18pts.
|=| 11th CANBERRA RAIDERS: 9-11, 373-443, -70, 22pts.
|=| Wednesday's Market: CBY $1.80 v CAN $2.00 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Recent Clashes: Canterbury have won the past 3 games against Canberra including a 18-10 win in Round 16 in Canberra. Bulldogs have won 7 of the last 10 since 2005.
|=| Wednesday's Preview: Canberra have to win this game and the three after that to make the Finals so they have everything to play for here. Canterbury on the other hand implemented a terrible game plan in Round 1 this year and Kevin Moore still hasn't changed it despite his team's low position on the ladder... but Ben Roberts is back at five-eighth and that might (I stress MIGHT) allow the Bulldogs to open up their left side like in 2009 when they finished 2nd. Canberra's game plan isn't much better and despite beating the Panthers last Monday - I'm picking the Bulldogs to win this game at ANZ Stadium.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News August 12 (Friday's Update with help from SMH's Late Mail): Canterbury put Ben Roberts back at five-eighth and demote Ben Barba to the bench. Given Kevin Moore is debuting Daniel Rauicava in the centres but Ben Roberts didn't look out of place on the edged against the Knights - so why bench Barba? Ben Hannant is out with an ankle injury and Michael Hodgson goes to prop and Jamal Idris is back in the second row. Dene Halatau joins the bench. Canberra recall Shaun Fensom for Josh Miller and Joe Picker is 18th man.
Update August 13: Joe Picker has replaced Shaun Fensom in the Canberra squad with Canberra Coach David Furner sending Fensom to Souths Logan in the QLD Cup for 'conditioning'. Canterbury look like sticking with the lineup named on Tuesday.

WARRIORS v KNIGHTS
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From Mt Smart:
|=| 8th WARRIORS: 11-9, 439-441, -2, 26pts.
|=| 10th NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS: 9-11, 423-469, -46, 22pts.
|=| Wednesday's Market: WAR $1.45 v NEW $2.75 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Recent Clashes: Warriors won 32-24 in Round 14 in Newcastle & have won 5 of the last 6 games against the Knights.
|=| Wednesday's Preview: If the Warriors win this game they can not only put themselves one win from securing a playoff spot - but by beating the Knights they can knock off one of the teams who can challenge the Warriors for that playoff spot. Newcastle were good against Canterbury but the Warriors did the job beating Cronulla and return home for this clash. Newcastle are probably good value if you want an upset (but if Jarrod Mullen doesn't play - they are a big risk) but I'm sticking with the Warriors at Mt Smart.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News August 12 (Friday's Update with help from SMH's Late Mail): The Warriors have not named Jerome Ropati & Kevin Locke for another week - but Ropati may be a late inclusion here for Joel Moon. Bill Tupou's hat-trick against the Sharks might keep Locke out however. Ian Henderson starts at hooker with Aaron Heremaia on the bench. Sam Rapira made his comeback from injury last weekend but stays on the bench. Newcastle named the same 17 that defeated Canterbury and added Joel Edwards to the bench. In form playmaker Jarrod Mullen is in doubt with a rib injury, while Con Mika (who was a late scratching last weekend) has a hamstring strain and won't travel with the team if he can't pass a fitness test on Thursday. Scott Dureau is in line to replace Mullen for the trip to New Zealand.
Update August 13: Jarrod Mullen has broken ribs and is definitely out of this week's clash with the Warriors (he could be out long term) - with Scott Dureau coming in. The Warriors may have a late change as noted above but are at the moment 1-17.
 |=| NRL Tweet's Prediction: WARRIORS by 10 =  ?

|=| SUNDAY
STORM v RABBITOHS
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From AAMI:
|=| MELBOURNE STORM 16th: 11-9, 399-313, +86, 0pts.
|=| SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS 9th: 10-10, 502-441, +61, 24pts.
|=| Wednesday's Market: MEL $1.45 v SOU $2.75 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Recent Clashes: Souths snatched a late 16-14 win over Melbourne in Perth in Round 16 but the Stom have dominated since 2004 winning 8 of the last 10 games with Souths.
|=| Wednesday's Preview: Melbourne at home a team you can tip... and although South Sydney are in a position where they have to win 3 of their last 4 to get into the playoffs - Melbourne at home actually turn up to play. The other factor here is the absence of John Sutton & Ben Lowe for the Bunnies and although they get the likes of Burgess, Crocker, Champion & Best back after missing last week - you still have to stick with the Storm who being their farewell homestand to Greg Inglis who is joining Brisbane. If Souths had John Sutton you could entertain them here... but they don't so it is Melbourne for the win.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News August 12 (Friday's Update with help from SMH's Late Mail): Melbourne are back at home so the chances of big names getting rested may be slimmer... looking at the draw if any big stars are going to get rested it will be Round 25 at Leichhardt. Dane Nielsen comes back into the team for Willie Isa, while Jesse Bromwich will play after being named on the bench alongside Todd Lowrie & Kevin Proctor. South Sydney regain Michael Crocker, Sam Burgess, Colin Best, Beau Champion & Luke Capewell but have lost John Sutton & Ben Lowe to season ending injuries. Rookie Dylan Farrell who scored a hat-trick on debut has kept a spot on the bench.
Update August 13: Beau Champion has a corked knee and is no certainty to play the Storm - rookie Dylan Farrell would come in for him. The Storm have a 6 man bench that they will cut down on game day - Ryan Hoffman should play despite a virus.

TIGERS v PANTHERS
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From Campbelltown:
|=| 5th WESTS TIGERS: 12-8, 430-432, -2, 28pts.
|=| 2nd PENRITH PANTHERS: 12-8, 499-398, +101, 28pts.
|=| Wednesday's Market: WTG $1.95 v PEN $1.85 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Recent Clashes: Penrith have won 5 straight against the Tigers including a 26-18 win in Round 7 at CUA. Since 2004 the Tigers have just 2 wins (both in 2007) from the last 10 games against Penrith.
|=| Wednesday's Preview: This game could decide the Top 4 fate of the loser. Penrith's differential is still outstanding but they have lost 4 of 5 and blew a 26-12 lead over Canberra at halftime on Monday Night - so they aren't going better than the Tigers - despite what some people might think. If the Tigers don't have McKinnon, Galloway & Lawrence I think the tip will change to the Panthers but at this stage - pick the Tigers to win at Campbelltown on the back of Farah & Marshall's quality.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News August 12 (Friday's Update with help from SMH's Late Mail): A few injury concerns for the Wests Tigers from the team named on Tuesday. Wade McKinnon is still battling a back injury that weakens his hamstring, while Chris Lawrence & Keith Galloway are suffering from concussion. Todd Payten has also been named to return after missing last weekend. Penrith have named Lachlan Coote but his groin injury is a week to week proposition. Tim Grant returns from a leg injury at prop. Matt Elliott has named a 7 man bench with Daine Laurie included.
Update August 13: Wade McKinnon is unlikely to play, while Keith Galloway & Chris Lawrence will be assessed on Saturday. Penrith will see if Lachlan Coote & Luke Walsh can make it through a training session before clearing them for the game on Sunday.

DRAGONS v SEA EAGLES
|=| The NRL Tweet's Game Notes From WIN Jubilee:
|=| 1st ST.GEORGE-ILLAWARRA DRAGONS: 14-6, 406-215, +191, 32pts.
|=| 6th MANLY-WARRINGAH SEA EAGLES: 11-9, 478-402, +76, 26pts.
|=| Wednesday's Market: STI $1.48 v MAN $2.65 (Graphic is Tuesday's Team Lineup)
|=| Recent Clashes: Manly made a statement with a 24-6 win over the Dragons at Brookvale in Round 9 but St.George-Illawarra have won 3 of the last 5 and 7 of the last 10 since 2005.
|=| Wednesday's Preview: Manly enter the game having crushed the Storm at Brookvale but the Dragons aren't going to have the lifelessness the Storm had here at Kogarah. There's no doubt the attacking issue that the Dragon have are not solved but they got their result against the Roosters with a strong defence once more - and Manly's attack does get shut down by an intense defensive line. Take the Dragons at home.
|=| Team Selection + Fantasy News August 12 (Friday's Update with help from SMH's Late Mail): Luke Priddis has been included on a 5 man bench but he was dropped last weekend for Nathan Fien and that seems to indicate that Fien has the inside running for the hooking role on the bench. Manly have named William Hopoate at fullback after he replaced Ben Farrar last weekend but he has been ruled out with a hamstring injury - his replacement is as yet unknown. Josh Perry is out with a leg injury, Brent Kite starts and Matt Cross comes onto the bench. Matt Ballin (concussion) and Anthony Watmough (cork) are in minor doubt.
Update August 13: No word yet on William Hopoate's replacement but Manly may opt to play Chris Bailey in the centres, shift Steven Matai to the wing and move Michael Robertson to fullback to bring in another forward on the bench. The Dragons will go with Nathan Fien ahead of Luke Priddis.
